The Pittsburgh Penguins, sitting four points out of the final wild card spot in the East, have finally pulled the plug on starting goaltender Tristan Jarry.

Wednesday, the Penguins announced they were putting Jarry on waivers.

The decision comes after the 29-year-old goalie gave up three goals on 17 shots in a 4-2 loss to the Seattle Kraken at PPG Paints Arena, Tuesday night. The Penguins have lost three in a row and seven of their last eight games (1-4-3). The team previously sent Jarry to the minors for a conditioning stint in late October.

Jarry has never found his game this season. He’s given up five or more goals six times and three or more in four of his last five. His last victory came nearly a month ago, on December 23, when he gave up three goals to the Philadelphia Flyers.

Jarry has a record of 8-8-4 with a 3.31 goals-against average and a .886 save percentage in 22 games. According to MoneyPuck, he’s given up 9.5 more goals than expected, making him the fifth-worst goalie in the league in that category.

Not only has Jarry surrendered a lot of goals, but he’s also constantly put the Penguins behind the eight ball, giving up goals on one of the first three shots he faced in 12 of his 22 appearances.

Jarry’s struggles come at the midway point of a five-year contract he signed on July 1, 2023, worth $5.375 million annually. Burying Jarry in the AHL with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins will only save the team $1.15 million, meaning Pittsburgh will still be on the hook for $4-plus million on their salary cap.
