Hershey Bears regulars Nathan Walker and Riley Barber both left the Capitals organization in the summer for better opportunities on other NHL teams.
Tuesday, their dreams of starting the 2019-20 season in the NHL likely came to an end when the St. Louis Blues and Montreal Canadiens put both players on waivers.
Almost exactly one year ago the Capitals signed Maximilian Kammerer to a two-way, three-year contract. On Tuesday, the Athletic’s Chris Kuc reported that the Capitals have placed Kammerer on unconditional waivers, meaning his contract with the Capitals’ organization can be terminated.
The undrafted German forward played with the Capitals’ AHL affiliate the Hershey Bears for the 2018-19 season. He registered only four goals and nine assists over the course of 33 games, missing a significant amount of games due to injury and healthy scratches, and was not called up to the Capitals during the regular season of playoffs.
Before being signed by the Capitals, Kammerer was the 2016-17 rookie of the year for the German league, Deutsche Eishockey Liga. In 2017-18 he was the second leading scorer for his former team, Düsseldorfer EG.

Stanley Cup champion Eric Fehr left DC more than two years ago. In those two years, he has now been placed on waivers twice: once by the Pittsburgh Penguins and now by the Toronto Maple Leafs.
On Monday, after officially signing defenseman Roman Polak to a contract, the Leafs began the process of removing Fehr from their roster. Dominic Moore beat Fehr out for the team’s fourth-line center role and it looks like the Leafs are choosing to carry eight defensemen.

Two summers ago, Eric Fehr left Washington for rival Pittsburgh. During his first season in the ‘Burgh, Fehr won a Stanley Cup, helping push the Penguins past his former club in the second round of the playoffs.
On Tuesday, Fehr – in a stunning turn of events – was placed on waivers by the Penguins.
During training camp, the Toronto media wrote about how former Capital Brooks Laich would be a great choice to become the Leafs’ 18th captain in franchise history.
“I was one of those kids, a Leafs fan growing up who wrote school papers on being captain,” Laich said to the Toronto Sun in September. “But I think all that will sort itself out. I haven’t had any discussion like that, I’ve not been approached.”
On Sunday in a surprise move, the Leafs put Laich and his $4.5 million cap hit on waivers. This is the last year of Laich’s six-year, $27 million contract that he received from George McPhee and signed in 2011.
