Sheldon Rempal is on his way to join the Hershey Bears.
The 30-year-old winger cleared NHL waivers on Saturday, allowing the Capitals to assign him to their AHL affiliate.
Rempal impressed during his first training camp with the Capitals after signing a one-year contract with the club over the summer. The Calgary native was one of the KHL’s top scorers last season and boasts 21 games of prior NHL experience with the Vegas Golden Knights, Carolina Hurricanes, Los Angeles Kings, and Vancouver Canucks.
“He was tremendous in training camp,” head coach Spencer Carbery said Friday. “I thought he was outstanding in the practices, both exhibition games. We had him slated to play one exhibition game. We changed that plan because of the way that he played in Columbus. Seven shots. He was all around the puck, and I thought he was good again last night as well. He has every argument to say that he could play in the NHL tomorrow.”
Rempal is a two-time 60-point scorer in the AHL, having played for the Abbotsford Canucks, Henderson Silver Knights, Chicago Wolves, and Ontario Reign. His career-best year in the league came during the 2021-22 campaign with the Canucks, where he recorded 69 points (33g, 36a) in 55 games.
The Capitals also sent prospect goaltender Antoine Keller to the Bears earlier on Saturday. He is the third goalie in Hershey, behind Garin Bjorklund and Mitch Gibson.
Hershey began their training camp under new head coach Derek King last weekend and play their third and final game of the AHL preseason on Sunday.
