Alex Ovechkin’s goals were so nice, we’re writing about them twice.
After scoring the game-tying goal — career goal no. 769 — in the third period, Ovechkin won the game in the shootout in the bottom of the third round.
As boos rained down from Hurricanes fans, Ovechkin skated in and beat Hurricanes goaltender Antti Raanta with a backhanded shot.
The Washington Capitals did not play their best game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, but after some clutch goal-scoring and even clutchier goaltending, they pulled out the 4-3 victory in overtime.
While Capitals players remained humble after the game, the Capitals Twitter did not, saluting its biggest rival with a Penguins-shaped wordle L.
Before the Capitals took the ice for their morning skate, the Carolina Hurricanes laid out their free giveaway, “Raise Up” rally towels, on the seats for Game Four.
They trolled the Capitals by spelling out Canes in all-lowercase.
Those monsters.

Here is Wilson punching Foligno in the face.
The Capitals got tattooed by the Sabres tonight 4-1. I want to point out to you the strangest part of the evening: a bout between Marcus Foligno and Tom Wilson.
Tom Wilson punched Foligno eight consecutive times in the face with a left jab. Foligno, desperate to end the fight, wrestled Wilson to the ice. Foligno then celebrated as if he won while he skated to the penalty box.
Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson took a lot of punishment in the first period against Tampa. Willy Baby drew three minor penalties from the Lightning after absorbing several brutal cheap shots, including two punches to the head at center ice and one headfirst boarding.
In typical Willy Baby style, he remained undaunted. He laughed off the Lightning’s feeble attempts to injure him. If my lip-reading skills are still passable, I’m pretty sure he wanted to punch someone multiple times in the face.
O’Brien signs his first NHL contract.
It always seems there’s one player at every camp who comes out of nowhere to make the team. Last season it was Connor Carrick. This season it was undrafted free-agent invitee Liam O’Brien.
The forward/two-time WWE champion, who managed just 42 goals in 261 junior games, did not get signed by Brian MacLellan to a three-year entry-level contract because of his scoring prowess. It was his tenacity and grit.
All of O’Brien’s strengths came through during Tuesday’s 6-5 shootout loss to the San Jose Sharks. O’Brien tallied his first NHL point in his third NHL game and also got a bunch of media coverage for taunting bear-on-skates John Scott.
