Ex-Pens axe Pens: Caps beat Penguins 6-1

The Washington Capitals just ultra-thrashed the Pittsburgh Penguins at home on Sunday night. Boy howdy was this a beatdown.

Martin Fehervary kicked us off with a shorthanded goal set up by Wilson and Hathaway. Alex Ovechkin was the consummate playmaker for Hathaway, who scored made it 2-0, only to have the Penguins get on the board with a close-up goal from Guentzel before the first intermission.

The Capitals played a strong second period and got rewarded with two late goals from Conor Sheary and Daniel Sprong. Evgeny Kuznetsov made it a full-fledged blowout in the third, and Tom Wilson made it 6-1.

Scenes from Hockey Fights Cancer night at Capital One Arena

The Washington Capitals hosted Hockey Fights Cancer night at Capital One Arena on Sunday. The team lit their barn purple and went to great lengths pregame to honor those in the DMV and Capitals community who have been impacted by cancer.

The Caps took the ice during warmups wearing specially designed lavender jerseys. Players also taped their sticks with lavender-colored tape. The jerseys and sticks are now available via auction to help raise money for cancer research.

Before puck drop, the fierce rivals held a moment of reflection where they stood at center ice together.

Live blog: Capitals face Penguins on Hockey Fights Cancer night

The biggest rivalry in hockey will be renewed on Sunday as the Washington Capitals take on the Pittsburgh Penguins for the first time this season. It’s also Hockey Fights Cancer night at Capital One Arena.

Caps goaltender Vitek Vanecek will be back in net after missing the last two games due to an upper-body injury. The Penguins will also get a major boost to their lineup with Sidney Crosby, Brian Dumoulin, Marcus Pettersson, and Chad Ruhwedel all returning. Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan will return behind the bench too.

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby and head coach Mike Sullivan removed from COVID-19 protocols before game against Capitals

The Penguins suffered a COVID-19 outbreak in their locker room last month. Saturday, the team finally got some good news. Sidney Crosby and several other Penguins players will return to the team from their protocol-related absences.

Head coach Mike Sullivan will also be back behind the bench too. With Sullivan out, former Capitals head coach Todd Reirden had been manning the Pens bench.

The Penguins play the Washington Capitals in DC on Sunday night.

Todd Reirden will be head coach of the Penguins tonight with Mike Sullivan in protocol due to COVID-19

Todd Reirden is back as an NHL bench boss (sorta) and it only took 444 days for him to claw his way back.

The former Capitals head coach will lead the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight against the Philadelphia Flyers with Mike Sullivan in COVID-19 protocol.

Sidney Crosby’s back

Pittsburgh Penguins coach Mike Sullivan announced Saturday morning that forward human Sidney Crosby will make his season debut tonight against the New Jersey Devils.

Crosby missed the season’s first seven games with a wrist injury that required surgery.

Evgeni Malkin joins Sidney Crosby on the injured list, will miss at least first two months of season

The Pittsburgh Penguins will be without star center Evgeni Malkin for at least the first two months of this season as he recovers from offseason knee surgery.

The Pens’ other star center, Sidney Crosby had wrist surgery in early September and is set to miss six weeks as he recovers from that procedure.

Four years later, Matt Niskanen trolls fan who got vulgar tattoo of him after Sidney Crosby hit

Former Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen retired in 2020 after 13 seasons in the NHL. The two-way rearguard was sturdy and dependable in his own end. Quiet and to himself off-the-ice, Nisky had a mean streak while playing and was never afraid to drop the gloves or throw a huge hit when the opportunity presented itself. He also had a long memory.

While the newly-retired Nisky has never posted a tweet or a photo on Instagram, the 34-year-old Minnesota native was internet-astute enough to settle an old social-media score with a fan from over four years ago.

Pittsburgh Penguins clinch East, Capitals miss out on division crown for first time in six seasons

Despite tying the game in the third and beating the Philadelphia Flyers in overtime, the Washington Capitals have lost out on a division championship for the first time in six seasons.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have clinched the MassMutual East and home ice in the first two rounds of the playoffs. With the Capitals’ 2-1 overtime win, they will officially be the number two seed in the Divisional Playoffs.

Third string goaltenders may determine who wins the East Division tonight

The Washington Capitals have a chance of winning their sixth straight division title, but they will need some serious help from an unpredictable source.

The Capitals, who have a game in hand, sit two standings points behind the Pittsburgh Penguins coming into Saturday’s games.
