The Pittsburgh Penguins continued to diminish the meaning of a sellout on Tuesday.
The Penguins allowed fans at PPG Paints Arena for the first time this season after getting approval from Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf on Monday. 2,800 fans were allowed into the 18,387 capacity arena.
Despite the building being 15 percent full, the Penguins publicly declared it their 610th consecutive sellout.
Todd Rierden won’t be coaching when the Pittsburgh Penguins take on the Philadelphia Flyers Tuesday night.
Reirden was placed on the league’s COVID-19 Unavailability List shortly after warmups. Per the team, skating and skills development coach Ty Hennes will take Todd’s place behind the bench, joining head coach Mike Sullivan and assistant coach Mike Vellucci.
Reirden coaches the Penguins’ defense and runs their power play.
The NHL’s COVID unavailability list has been dwindling in recent days, but it will have one big addition today: Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby.
On Tuesday morning, Pens head coach Mike Sullivan said Crosby will be unavailable for tonight’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Washington Capitals didn’t have their best game Tuesday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins so in response, they decided to reverse that and dominate the puck all Thursday night against those same Pens. The Caps came out on top by a final score of 5-2 after some late, scary back and forth on the scoreboard.
The Caps outshot the Pens 35 to 28 and out-attempted them at five-on-five 55 to 37.

Against the Penguins on Thursday night, your Washington Capitals did what Washington Capitals do: obtain lead, blow lead, repeat. But this time there was a twist. I won’t spoil it for you, but it was Tom Wilson.
Offensive dynamo Nick Jensen set up white-hot Nick Backstrom for a good goal early in the game, but then the rest of the first period and all of the second passed without any more scoring. TJ Oshie scored a thrilling goal to open up the third period, but Brandon Tanev’s shorthanded goal followed close behind. Then Jake Guentzel got a greasy goal and all of a sudden the lead was fully blown.
As per the Prophecy, the game was won by Tom Wilson with a low-down tap-in on the power play. Carl Hagelin scores as only Carl Hagelin can: with an empty netter. Eller added another.
Caps win!

A long homestand for the Washington Capitals is coming to an end this evening when they host the Pittsburgh Penguins. Yes, again. This is their sixth match-up of the season already and the Penguins are 4-1-0 against the Caps this season.
Something else happening again? Coach Laviolette is messing with the lines. Top line Conor Sheary? Evgeny Kuznetsov back up top? What the hell, sure, why not.

New Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ron Hextall and President of Hockey Operations Brian Burke made their first significant roster move on Wednesday. The executive duo claimed right-handed defenseman Mark Friedman on waivers from the Philadelphia Flyers.
The pickup was massively talked about on Hockey Twitter, but not for the reason you might think.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman (no relation) reported the news on the social media site, but he didn’t include Friedman’s first name in the tweet. So it read like this.
The Washington Capitals couldn’t respond to their coach’s urges and fell in a pretty poor effort to their fierce rival the Pittsburgh Penguins. The game ended after a terrible three-on-three overtime period that saw the Pens score the winner and take down the game 3-2.
The Pens outshot the Caps 37 to 22 and out-attempted them at five-on-five 57 to 45.

The Washington Capitals played a mostly miserable game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night. But mostly miserable is sometimes also partially passable, which is how the Caps somehow got a standings point out of the night.
The Caps got crushed in the first period, spotting the Penguins a one-goal lead thanks to Evgeni Malkin on the power play. Washington fought back in the second period with two big goals — one from Richard Panik and one from Conor Sheary — only to lose their lead on the very next shift as Jake Guentzel tipped in a tying goal.
Both teams turtled in the third, pushing us into overtime, which is where Kasperi Kapanen won it.
Caps lose.

The Washington Capitals’ new Reverse Retro jerseys finally made their long-awaited debut Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The jersey features the Screaming Eagle logo, which the Capitals introduced in 1995 and retired in 2007, as well as a CAPITALS stripe – the first of its kind in the ’90s. The team’s old Capitol Dome logo is on the shoulder.
Before the season started, the Caps had the top-selling Reverse Retro design in the NHL and the league’s online store sold out of Alex Ovechkin authentic jerseys in minutes.
A recent RMNB poll of over 3,000 Capitals fans confirmed the sweater’s popularity. The team’s Reverse Retro jersey is the most liked specialty jersey in the Alex Ovechkin Era and the Screaming Eagle is the most beloved team logo.
Richard Panik scored the first goal in the new Reverse Retro sweaters while NBC Sports Washington revealed during the telecast that Sergei Gonchar scored the first goal in Screaming Eagle history.
