Alex Ovechkin is the greatest goal-scorer in NHL history, but he also knows a thing or two about how to play between the pipes.
Over the years, Ovechkin has put on goalie gear to the amusement of his friends and teammates, showing off some mastery at the position.
Against the Buffalo Sabres on Friday, Ovechkin put those skills to use, throwing his body in front of a shot while the Sabres had a yawning net.
During Alex Ovechkin’s rookie year in the NHL, he lived with former general manager George McPhee and his family. Living with the McPhees helped Ovechkin ease into a new culture and the NHL lifestyle, but it also helped shape McPhee’s son, Graham.
Graham, who was 7 at the time, would play video games and hockey in the basement with Ovechkin. The Russian machine’s presence also helped Graham understand what it meant to be a professional hockey player, more than his general manager dad ever could. Graham, now a sophomore at Boston College, was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers during the 2016 draft after spending years honing his craft at Kettler Capitals Iceplex.
Even though Graham was young when he first met Ovechkin, they two have kept in touch throughout the years even after McPhee left the Capitals. Today, on Ovechkin’s first visit to Las Vegas, the two took a photo together before the game.

Sunday afternoon, the Washington Capitals, victors of five straight, announced that they cancelled their Monday morning practice. So that evening Caps captain Alex Ovechkin hosted a party at his Virginia home. All the Russian Capitals (including their families) dropped by along with several members of Ovechkin’s posse. Because of the postings on social media, we got a rare glimpse inside Ovi’s house where we notice Alex Ovechkin has a lot of photos of Alex Ovechkin up. Also, woah, that is a lot of Coke machines.
But what’s a party without a DJ? So Ovechkin, who recently got turntables set up at his house by Club Glow business partner Pete Kalamoutsos, invited Arty, a famous Russian record producer and DJ. According to Wikipedia, Arty has collaborated with such popular acts like Armin van Buuren, Above & Beyond, BT, Paul van Dyk, Mat Zo, OneRepublic, and Matisse & Sadko.
The night began with some street hockey with tennis balls in what appears to be Ovechkin’s garage.

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin on Sunday made his first public appearance since reports surfaced he got married to fiancee Nastya Shubskaya over the weekend. Ovechkin played in Slava Kozlov’s farewell hockey game in Voskresensk near Moscow. Kozlov won two Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings (1997, 1998) and two Gagarin Cups (2011, 2012).

Inside the locker room, Ovi — wearing full goalie gear — was busy playing a game of ball hockey with his teammates, defending the invisible net behind him. It’s priorities, people.

Sam Jacobson, a 16-year-old lymphoma survivor, had his wish come true when he spent two days with the Capitals and his hockey hero, Alexander Ovechkin. The Make-a-Wish Foundation set up the experience for Jacobson, who played on his hockey team during his recovery from lymphoma.
He spent two days with the Capitals, starting with a tour of the practice facility and locker room on March 7 of last year. Jacobson was given had his own stall stocked with hockey equipment donated by Bauer. After suiting up, he ended the day by skating with Ovechkin, Karl Alzner, Jason Chimera, and other players after practice. On top of that, Sam attended two Caps home games and spent some time with Ovechkin after the games in the locker room.
