The Washington Capitals took the ice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex on Monday for the first time following their embarrassing 4-1 defeat to the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2023 Stadium Series game.
The ugly outing on Saturday was exacerbated by the fact that it was the Capitals’ fourth regulation loss in a row, moving the team out of a playoff spot.
Due to that, Caps head coach Peter Laviolette has put his forward lines and defense pairings into a blender for Monday’s practice.

After a three-game skid, the Washington Capitals hoped a change of scenery would revitalize the team as they faced the Carolina Hurricanes at NC State’s Carter-Finley Stadium. That did not happen. Instead, the Caps must now reckon with a four-game losing streak during which they have not held a lead.
Following their 4-1 loss to the Canes on Saturday night, Capitals players and head coach Peter Laviolette spoke to the media and tried to explain what went wrong and what this team needs to do moving forward.
“I don’t think concern is the right word,” TJ Oshie said. “I think our playoff hockey probably starts in this next week here, otherwise, we’re gonna be on the outside looking in.”

The Washington Capitals got forwards Nicklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson back from long-term injuries on January 8 and it has created a logjam up front in their lineup. Head coach Peter Laviolette has been forced to deal with that problem by often scratching players that otherwise would expect to be playing every night when available.
Backstrom’s return in particular has given the team five regular centermen. With the NHL trade deadline set for March 3 this season, the Caps could look to move one of them to free up that blockage and potentially help shore up some depth issues elsewhere on their roster.
The Athletic’s Eric Duhatschek, Pierre LeBrun, and Michael Russo put together a trade board for this year’s deadline based on the rumblings and rumors they hear around the league.
On January 18, Duhatschek added Lars Eller to their list and stated the Caps would be willing to listen to offers on the third-line center.

Nic Dowd left Monday night’s contest against the New York Islanders very early due to a lower-body injury.
Head coach Peter Laviolette announced on Tuesday that Dowd would miss the team’s game against the Minnesota Wild and be out for “a bit”.

While the win was good, the victory not flawless. The W was powered by goaltender Darcy Kuemper as the team in front of him struggled. The Capitals’ forward lines in particular lacked chemistry as the team reintegrated Nicklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson into the lineup.
In response, Caps head coach Peter Laviolette put together a new set of interesting lines at practice.

Playing hockey and reading books may not be synonymous with each other, but the Washington Capitals are trying to change that.
On Monday, the Capitals announced that they launched a Little Free Library book-sharing box in the lobby at MedStar Capitals Iceplex to provide book access to all Caps fans and encourage more reading.
The book-sharing box includes various hockey-related titles as well as books written by Capitals alumni and media. A dozen Capitals players also contributed the most recent book they’ve read either by themselves or out loud to a family member.
The Washington Capitals are on their hottest streak of the season as winners of five-straight games. It appears more reinforcements could be on the way sooner rather than later.
The team’s morning skate featured several injured members of the roster ahead of their Thursday night matchup with the Dallas Stars.
