Kunlun Red Star to play remainder of KHL season in Russia due to coronavirus outbreak

The Kunlun Red Star will play the remainder of their KHL season in Russia due to the coronavirus outbreak, according to goaltending coach Dusty Imoo.

Kunlun were scheduled to play two more of their regular season games in Beijing, one on February 2 against CSKA Moscow and another on February 24 against Dinamo Riga. The February 2 game had already been postponed due to the celebration of the Chinese New Year from January 25 to February 2. Both games will now be played at a to-be-determined location in Russia.

Devante Smith-Pelly scores first career KHL goal

Former Capitals forward Devante Smith-Pelly scored his first career KHL goal in Kunlun Red Star’s 4-0 victory over Admiral Vladivostok, Tuesday.

Smith-Pelly’s second-period tally was a shorthanded goal.

Report: Devante Smith-Pelly will continue his career in the KHL with Kunlun Red Star

After being released from his professional try out by the Calgary Flames, Devante Smith-Pelly has found a new team. It is not in the NHL.

The Stanley Cup champion forward, according to R-Sport, will play for the Kunlun Red Star, a KHL team located in China.

Alex Ovechkin arrives in China to much fanfare, drops ceremonial first puck before hockey game

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin arrived in China on Sunday to begin his five days in the Middle Kingdom. Ovechkin will be serving as an ambassador of the NHL to help grow the game in Asia.

The future Hall of Famer arrived in China around midnight Eastern Time and was greeted by throngs of fans at the airport. Ovechkin signed autographs, took photos, and high-fived fans.

Michael Latta bats puck out of mid-air to score first career KHL goal

Over the summer, former Capital and forever brobean Michael Latta left North American hockey behind and joined Chinese team Kunlun Red Star of the Kontinental League on a one-year contract.

Latta’s first tally for the Beijing based team — which has Wayne Gretzky as their global ambassador — came eight games into his KHL career, against Avtomobilist on Sunday. And, as far as first goals go, it was pretty sweet.

Michael Latta signs with Kunlun Red Star, will play in KHL next season

Former Capitals forward Michael Latta is no longer an AHL player. Instead he’s headed to China after signing a one-year contract on Wednesday with the KHL’s latest addition, the Kunlun Red Star.

After Red Star publicly announced the newest addition, Latta shared the news on twitter, saying he was excited about the new adventure and thanking Kunlun for the opportunity.
