Capital One Arena team store selling Caps home and alternate jerseys with Caesar Sportsbook ads

Over the weekend, a viral tweet emerged showing that the Minnesota Wild were selling authentic jerseys with ads on them at their team store. ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski poked around and learned that the NHL and Fanatics was giving teams the option of selling jerseys with ads on them.

Sunday, during Washington’s first preseason game of the year against the Buffalo Sabres, we learned where the Capitals fell on the decision.

Report: NHL giving teams option to sell jerseys to fans with ads on them

One of the biggest questions entering the NHL’s Jersey Ad Era was if retail jerseys — the sweaters that you and I buy — would have ads on them.

This week, that answer became clearer after an eagle-eyed University of Minnesota student noticed that the Wild’s Adidas authentic jerseys had TRIA patches on them.

The viral tweet got ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski on the case, prompting comments from the NHL and Fanatics – the league’s official retailer.

Hendrix Lapierre becomes first Capitals player to rock team’s new jersey ad

The NHLPA Rookie Showcase is being hosted at MedStar Capitals Iceplex this year and Hendrix Lapierre is the Washington Capitals’ lone representative. Before taking the ice on Tuesday, Lapierre spoke with the media, including RMNB, about his excitement for the event and how his summer has gone.

But the most notable thing about the conversation was arguably what Lapierre was wearing. The prospect center rocked the Capitals’ authentic jersey for the upcoming 2022-23 season, which includes the franchise’s inaugural NHL jersey ad sold to Caesars Sportsbook.

Washington Capitals pick Caesars Sportsbook as first jersey advertisement partner

In August, we learned that NHL game sweaters would have advertisements for the first time ever in 2022-23. Now, we know who the Capitals’ first partner is.

Early Friday morning, the Capitals announced that they had come to terms with Caesars Entertainment and will advertise Caesars Sportsbook on their sweaters. The advertisements will only appear on the Capitals’ home and third jerseys.

The Capitals are the first team in the NHL to name a jersey ad partner.

Report: NHL jerseys will have ads in 2022-23 season

Sportico is reporting that the NHL’s Board of Governors unanimously approved jersey advertisements for the 2022-23 season, officially ending an ad-less uniform era that began to erode with helmet decals this past January. The ads will be rectangles that are 3×3.5 inches wide.

The NHL sent a memo to all 32 teams that they could begin negotiating with potential partners immediately to fill the space.

Gary Bettman says no NHL jersey ads next season but ‘it’s something we’re looking at’

Gary Bettman announced that jersey ads would not be coming to the NHL next season, but signaled it’s very much on the table and its implentation could come in the near future.

“I wouldn’t necessarily say that it’s inevitable,” Bettman said. “It’s something that makes good sense for us to be considering and looking at but certainly not for next season. Beyond that, I’m not prepared to predict but it’s something we’re looking at.”

Report: NHL jerseys could have ads on them by the 2022-23 season

The NHL successfully integrated ads on helmets this season and now it seems the league is readying to take the *forbidden* step: selling sponsorship on jerseys.

Saturday, Mark Burns reported that multiple sources have told the Sports Business Journal that the NHL could have ads on jerseys as soon as the 2022-23 season. Burns said that several NHL teams are conducting valuations to figure out how much jersey ads and helmet ads could potentially be worth.
