Jeremy Roenick puts down Alex Ovechkin to praise Steven Stamkos: Stammer ‘makes other players better around him’

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos scored his 500th career goal on Wednesday against the Vancouver Canucks. The Lightning captain did it in style as he added two more in the game for his 11th career hat trick.

Stamkos is only the third active skater to score 500 goals, following Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby and Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin. Ovechkin found himself putting his own major stamp in the hockey history books earlier this season with a hat trick as he scored career goals 798, 799, and 800 against the Chicago Blackhawks on December 13.

After Stammer reached the big milestone, The Athletic’s Joe Smith polled fellow 500 goal scorers for their thoughts on Stamkos.

One of the more interesting responses came from Jeremy Roenick who decided to put down Ovechkin to praise Stamkos. It went exactly as you would expect.

Jeremy Roenick will not return to NBC Sports

Hockey Hall of Famer and broadcaster Jeremy Roenick will not return to NBC after his suspension in December. Roenick had held his position since 2010.

The broadcaster announced the news in a Twitter video in which he appears to read from a prepared statement. Roenick’s words, combined with the caption “What a Joke!”, suggest that he was dismissed by NBC earlier in the day, though there has been no official statement to that effect.

Suspendible hit? Dougie Hamilton elbowed Evgeny Kuznetsov in the head

Micheal Ferland was ejected in the second period for an illegal check to the head of Nic Dowd, but he may not be the Carolina Hurricanes’ player that’s in hot water after the game.

During the second intermission, NBC analysts Jeremy Roenick and Eddie Olczyk both went on the record saying Hamilton should be suspended by the Department of Player Safety for an elbow to the head of Evgeny Kuznetsov.

Update, Sunday, 2:00 PM: Chris Kuc of The Athletic says Hamilton will not face additional discipline.

On Dougie Hamilton elbow to Evgeny Kuznetsov, there wasn’t enough force to warrant supplemental discipline.
And Micheal Ferland did take a good angle and hit through Nic Dowd’s body without head contact.

Alex Ovechkin: “I Love to Celebration, I Love to Goals”

Ahead of the Capitals rivalry night game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday, NBC’s Jeremy Roenick sat awkwardly on a couch with three-time MVP Alex Ovechkin. Necklessly, Roenick asked Ovechkin about his passion for the game and how he felt about the constant criticism he receives from the media.

Ovechkin answered in Runglish. He made a boat metaphor.

Mikhail Grabovski Trolls Jeremy Roenick After Twitter Diss

There were a lot of wacky contracts given out at the start of free agency. But if you ask 500-goal scorer and very, very articulate NBC analyst Jeremy Roenick, there were none worse than the four-year, $20-million contract awarded to Mikhail Grabovski by the New York Islanders.

“Way to go islanders!!!!” Roenick said in another poorly capitalized and punctuated Twitter rage blackout. “Making a 40pt guy a 5 million dollar player!!! Grabovski?? 5 million??? I’m going back to the gym!! Good god.”

Jeremy Roenick Gives Braden Holtby’s Performance a Thumbs Down, Makes Farting Noises

During the first intermission, former NHL great Jeremy Roenick was asked what he thought of Braden Holtby‘s effort on the Pittsburgh Penguins’ two first period goals. Instead of using words, Roenick decided to go the caveman route, making a series of grunts and hand signals.

RMNB Presents The NBC Bingo Card

We already know how lucky we are to have such a talented broadcast team — so talented that they have their own hockey cards. Never is this more apparent, though, than when we’re briefly stranded on an NHL on NBC broadcast instead – as we will be on Saturday for Game 2. With only sixteen teams still playing hockey, Caps games will be broadcast even more frequently on NBC, because nothing soothes frayed postseason nerves like a rambling OHL story from Pierre McGuire.

We’re all familiar with the little quirks that go along with watching one of these NBC broadcasts, but now instead of feeling your blood pressure rise, you can simply play our bingo game!
