Remembering Hockey Twitter (RIP) with the best hockey tweets of all time

On Saturday we learned that X, the social network formerly known as Twitter, has removed images and links from before 2013. It’s like the burning of the Library of Alexandria, the sudden loss of a rich cultural heritage, except for dumb jokes.

The destruction of the archive, plus the promised ending of the block feature, the paywalling of TweetDeck, the mass unbanning of racists, the explosion of bots, the degradation of the verified feature, suspicious rate-limiting, and like 35 other factors make it unlikely Twitter will remain a lively place for hockey discourse for much longer.

That’s a shame, as Hockey Twitter has been a blast. Let’s remember some of the best hockey tweets of all time.

Brad Marchand vs Steve Dangle, explained 🍿

We’re basically in the All-Star Break now, so please forgive this digression into silliness.

Last weekend, Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras got into some trouble for words he said to Arizona Coyotes defender Troy Stecher during a scrum. Then a lot happened and now — for no apparent reason — Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand is publicly feuding with at least three members of the hockey press, including Steve Dangle.

Let’s figure this out together.

Ryan Ellis, the NASCAR driver, goes viral after Ryan Ellis, the hockey player, gets traded

Saturday, right before an NHL-mandated trade/waiver freeze for the Expansion Draft, the Nashville Predators, Philadelphia Flyers, and Vegas Golden Knights completed a three-team trade. The Predators sent defenseman Ryan Ellis to the Flyers for defenseman Philippe Myers and forward Nolan Patrick. The Golden Knights then acquired Patrick from the Preds for forward Cody Glass.

Hockey player Ryan Ellis, who has no Twitter, did not tweet reaction to the trade, but NASCAR driver Ryan Ellis, who is a big Capitals fan, sure did. And many are saying he won Hockey Twitter on Saturday.

Hockey Twitter has a field day after Elliotte Friedman reports ‘PIT claims Friedman’

New Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ron Hextall and President of Hockey Operations Brian Burke made their first significant roster move on Wednesday. The executive duo claimed right-handed defenseman Mark Friedman on waivers from the Philadelphia Flyers.

The pickup was massively talked about on Hockey Twitter, but not for the reason you might think.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman (no relation) reported the news on the social media site, but he didn’t include Friedman’s first name in the tweet. So it read like this.

Hockey Twitter is skeptical that Phil Kessel is ‘excited’ to be a member of the Arizona Coyotes

Over the offseason, the Pittsburgh Penguins traded forward Phil Kessel to the Arizona Coyotes for Alex Galchenyuk and prospect Pierre-Olivier Joseph.

Tuesday, Kessel arrived in Pheonix and was officially introduced a member of the Arizona Coyotes. While holding up his new Coyotes jersey for photographers, Phil smiled. But when asked to share a message to his new fans, Phil struggled to look, uh, thrilled, to be with his new team.
