Three former Capitals make Canadian Olympic team after IIHF accidentally posts roster day early

The IIHF confirmed in mid-January that players under NHL contract will not be permitted to play in the upcoming Beijing Winter Olympics. Due to that, nations have been scouring minor leagues and other professional leagues from around the world to fill their rosters.

Canada planned to announce their roster on January 25. But, Monday, the IIHF leaked it a day early.

Canada chose three former Capitals to its team.

Daniel Winnik takes bulldog onto the ice during Team Canada’s outdoor Spengler Cup practice

Beloved former Capital, Daniel Winnik, left the NHL this past summer and is currently playing in the Switzerland-based National League for Genève-Servette HC. Winnik currently has 13 points in 21 games this season.

In mid-December, Winnik was named to Team Canada’s Spengler Cup roster, which consists of some of the best Canadian players outside of the NHL. Winnik is an alternate captain. Five other club teams are playing in the 92nd edition of the holiday tournament, including HC Davos, the Thomas Sabo Ice Tigers, Kalevan Pallo, Metallurg Magnitogorsk, and HC Oceláři Třinec. The event is hosted by the Swiss team HC Davos and played each year in Davos, Switzerland, from December 26 to 31.

On Christmas Day, Team Canada held an outdoor practice in front of the Swiss Alps. One of Winnik’s bulldogs, Sonny, joined dad out on the ice for an impromtu skate.

Daniel Winnik signs with Swiss league team Geneve-Servette HC

On September 10, the Boston Bruins signed former Capital Daniel Winnik to a professional tryout agreement.

They, unfortunately, did not heed Peter’s stellar advice, as according to RTS Sports’ Marc-Andre Berset Winnik has instead signed with Geneve-Servette HC of the National League in Switzerland.

Daniel Winnik will try out for Boston Bruins, he’s really good, they should sign him

Joe Haggerty, the, um, best sportswriter that ever was, reports that the Boston Bruins have signed ex-Caps forward Daniel Winnik to a professional tryout agreement. Winnik, 33, last played for Bruce Boudreau’s Minnesota Wild. He’d be a great addition to Boston’s forward depth.

Former Capitals Daniel Winnik and Matt Hendricks try to fight, but mostly hold hands

Monday night, a game between the Minnesota Wild and Winnipeg Jets got heated late in the second period. Wild forward Daniel Winnik tripped Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey before a face-off.

Several Winnipeg players, including former Capital Mathieu Perreault, protested Winnik’s underhanded play. Shortly after the puck was dropped, former Capital Matt Hendricks laid down the law and fought former Capital Daniel Winnik.

Except there was not a lot of face punching.

Daniel Winnik cooks Thanksgiving dinner in just an apron (and boxers)

Everyone has their own Thanksgiving traditions. Some like their stuffing IN the bird, some like it outside.

Some others, including Daniel Winnik it seems, like to cook their dinner in (almost) no clothes. That’s new.

Daniel Winnik scores first goal since signing with the Minnesota Wild

On Saturday night, former Capital Daniel Winnik scored his first goal with the Minnesota Wild. Winnik signed with the Wild in early October after completing a professional tryout with the team during training camp.

With about a minute left in the third period, Winnik scored on the empty net to guarantee Minnesota the win against the Calgary Flames.

Daniel Winnik receives interest from several NHL teams after PTO ends with the Minnesota Wild

Former Capitals Daniel Winnik signed a professional try out agreement with the Minnesota Wild before training camp started.

Winnik appeared in five preseason games for the Wild, but his PTO has expired. While Winnik is still without a contract for the 2017-18 season, he is receiving interest from several suitors.

Daniel Winnik thanks Caps fans for their support after signing PTO with Minnesota Wild

Tuesday morning, forward Daniel Winnik finally received an opportunity for next season, inking a PTO with the Minnesota Wild. Despite scoring a career high 12 goals last season, Winnik was not offered a guaranteed contract. It’s another example of an NHL trend where teams value young talent over veterans in a checking-line role.

Tuesday night, Winnik, who has previously called his time in Washington the most enjoyable of his career, thanked Caps fans for their support.
