Nastya Ovechkina criticizes NHL after Alex Ovechkin, Caps’ Russians placed on league’s COVID unavailability list

Alex Ovechkin’s wife, Nastya, took to Instagram on Thursday to share her thoughts on the Russian Capitals’ placement on the NHL’s COVID-19 unavailability list. Ovechkin, Kuznetsov, Orlov, and Samsonov were disciplined and uneligible to play for a while after hanging out together in a hotel room during the Capitals’ most recent road trip. The Capitals were fined $100,000 as a team.

“I regret my choice to spend time together with my teammates in our hotel room and away from the locker room areas,” Ovechkin said in a statement released by the Capitals. “I will learn from this experience.”

Nastya took umbrage with the arbitrary nature of the league’s protocol.

The Capitals’ right-wing recently filmed a PSA for the NHL, promoting mask use.

How the pandemic has changed things for Capitals’ season-ticket holders: ‘I’m supposed to be there but I can’t’

When a community is hurting and in need of hope and inspiration, sports is a platform where people can come together and unite during dark times. In 1980, the Miracle On Ice gave hope to our country during a tough economic and political time.

This past year, and especially in the past few months, our country has been struggling with the COVID-19 pandemic while also dealing with the stress and dangerous aftermath of the 2020 presidential election.

As the NHL is preparing for the start of the new 2021 season, the thought of having a hockey game to watch at night is bringing a little bit of normalcy back to the hockey community, especially the season-ticket holders (STH’ers).

NHL: 17 different players on the Dallas Stars tested positive for COVID-19 during training camp

The Dallas Stars were forced to postpone their first three games of the season (at least) and now we’re learning more about why.

Tuesday night, the NHL announced that 27 different players tested positive for COVID-19 during league-wide training camps. 17 of those were from the Dallas Stars.

Previously, it was reported that only six players on Dallas contracted the deadly disease and two staff members.

Vancouver Canucks become fourth NHL team with COVID-19 related cancellations during training camp

The Vancouver Canucks, who feature former Capitals Braden Holtby, Nate Schmidt, and Jay Beagle on their roster, were forced to cancel their practices and workouts on Sunday.

The team explained on Twitter that the “decision was made out of an abundance of caution due to potential exposure of COVID-19.

Dallas Stars postpone games after 6 players contract COVID-19

The NHL just announced that an outbreak of the novel coronavirus will keep the Dallas Stars off the ice until at least Tuesday, January 19.

Six Stars players and two staff members tested positive for the disease forcing the NHL’s decision. The NHL says in a release that the team’s training facilities were closed and will remain locked down for several days while testing and contact tracing continues.

Florida Panthers announce that a limited number of fans will be allowed at all home games this season

The Florida Panthers will not be deterred by the pandemic. Taking advantage of lax rules from the state of Florida, the Panthers will allow fans to attend all 28 home games during the NHL’s 2020-21 season.

According to the team, BB&T Center will have a capacity of about 25 percent, meaning about 5,000 spectators can attend. Fans will receive a health screening before entering and will be mandated to wear masks at all times.

The NHL is ‘planning the private purchase’ of a COVID-19 vaccine ahead of the 2020-21 season

A key FDA panel recommended the approval of Pfizer and BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use on Thursday (17-4; 1 abstaining), marking the last step before the FDA can give its final approval for the vaccine’s use and distribution. The CDC also recommended that health care workers and nursing-home residents should be eligible to receive the vaccine first before anyone else. But states can distrbute the doses however it chooses.

As the NHL and NHLPA continue to hammer out details for next season, the league is reportedly planning the private purchase of a COVID-19 vaccine before puck drop next year. The report comes from Canadian hockey insider John Shannon who said that the vaccine will be available to everyone in the league, not just players.

“Source confirms that the NHL is planning the private purchase of a COVID vaccine for all constituents involved in the potential upcoming season,” Shannon tweeted.

South Carolina Stingrays play first game since ECHL’s 2019-20 season canceled due to COVID-19

Hockey has officially returned to The Palmetto State.

The ECHL’s South Carolina Stingrays faced off against the Greenville Swamp Rabbits at Bon Secours Wellness Arena, Saturday night. The Washington Capitals affiliate beat the Swamp Rabbits 6-3.

The exhibition marked the Stingrays only exhibition game before the start of the regular season.

Junior hockey league, QMJHL, pauses its season until January 3 due to worsening pandemic

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League is suspending its season due to the intensifying coronavirus pandemic. Capitals’ first-round pick Hendrix Lapierre plays in the league as a member of the Chicoutimi Saguenéens.

“The current situation with the pandemic in the regions in which we operate makes it extremely difficult to play games,” Commissioner Gilles Courteau said in a release. “With the holidays just around the corner, the provinces in the Maritimes have restricted access and travel, while red zone restrictions in Quebec do not permit us to play.”
