Bensten Schone Received the 30th Anniversary Victory Award For Exemplifying Exceptional Strength and Courage

While the Capitals were battling the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night, one tiny, important Caps fan from our community was accepting a major award. Bensten Schone was given the 30th anniversary Victory Award from the National Rehabilitation Hospital/Medstar. The event was held at the Mellon Auditorium and hosted by NBC 4’s Doreen Gentzler.

The Victory Award was created in 1986 to celebrate the victory of the human spirit and to honor individuals who best exemplify exceptional strength and courage in the face of physical adversity. B-Man overcame all odds last Winter after being struck by a vehicle while sledding. The RMNB and Caps community rallied behind Bensten and his beautiful family. You can walk down memory lane here.

“It’s only the second or third time a child has won the award,” Bensten’s mother Heather wrote to me. “The previous honorees are pretty impressive: political leaders, famous musicians, and actors. We were floored, and so very proud of him.”

#Play4BMan: Bensten Schone Goes to his First Regular Season Caps Game Since His Accident

While the Caps won a hockey game tonight, something else more important happened: Bensten Schone returned to Verizon Center after his tragic accident last January.

While sledding, the six-year-old Bensten accidentally went into the road and was struck by a car. He was taken to the hospital where he stayed in a coma for nearly two weeks. The RMNB community and, later, the entire Caps community, responded, getting behind the hashtag #pray4bman, where individuals posted selfies with hand-written well wishes. Eventually, Bensten pulled through and even sent the team motivational videos during the playoffs.

“He’s working really hard, really really hard and doing really really well,” his mother Heather told RMNB’s Chris Gordon. Bensten goes to Churchill Road Elementary School in Fairfax County, where he receives individualized teaching to help get him back to where he was before the accident.

Bensten Delivered a Message to the Caps Before Game Seven

Before the Caps took the ice for game seven on Monday, they received a special message from Bensten Schone, the six-year-old Caps fan who was struck by a car during a sledding accident in January. B-Man has made remarkable recovery since, overcoming a brain injury that threatened his life. For many Capitals players (and people in this community), he been an inspiration because of his strength through this entire ordeal.

The Caps aired a video he recorded for them before the game. It was sweet.

Bensten Schone’s Family Thanks Caps Fans For Support in Sweet Video

Oh, boy, get your tissues ready. I just received the final update from Bensten Schone’s family, and spoiler alert: it’s a good one.

If you hadn’t heard, six-year-old Bensten was seriously injured in a sledding accident back in January. His family started a hashtag, #pray4bman, that went viral across the region. A ton of people, especially Bensten’s fellow Caps fans, sent words of encouragement to B-man and his family.

With Bensten now home and on the long road to full recovery, his family posted a YouTube video recapping the incredible journey the family has been on for the past few weeks. It includes many of your tweets and photos. It’s so inspiring and a great reminder of what an amazing community we have as Caps fans.

Caps Players Visit Bensten ‘B-Man’ Schone at Home

Just two months after a serious sledding injury, six-year-old Bensten Schone is back at home recovering with his family. Since the end of January, the entire Washington Capital community has rallied around B-man and watched his odds-defying comeback.

Watch and Cry as Bensten’s Mother Shows Her Son the Video the Capitals Made For Him

Six days ago, Bensten opened his eyes for the first time since his accident. On Thursday, to the surprise of everyone, little B-man spoke– and he even laughed a little. Bensten’s uncle Tyler called it a miracle.

At his bedside, Bensten’s mother Heather played for her son the video the Capitals had made for him. You can see his reaction below. Warning: This is going to be emotional.

I hate feeling my own feels. The Caps just turned my insides to mush with this two-minute video dedicated to Bensten “Bman” Schone. As you’ll recall, Bensten is the six-year-old Caps fan who was struck by a car after accidentally sledding into the road. He’s been slowly recovering from a brain injury ever since.
