Barry Trotz brings back ‘hydrate’ superstition after winning Stanley Cup with it in Washington

Hockey players are known for being superstitious, but hockey coaches can be too.

Last season, Barry Trotz coached the Washington Capitals to the Stanley Cup. Before every Capitals playoff game, one of Trotz’s superstitions was to tell reporters to hydrate at the beginning or ending of every press conference.

On Wednesday, the morning before the Islanders play Game One against the Penguins, Trotz brought the superstition back as he told the assembled New York and Pittsburgh media to hydrate.

Barry Trotz becomes fourth NHL head coach of all time to win 800 games

Tuesday night at Nassau Coliseum, former Capitals head coach Barry Trotz reached a historic milestone.

Trotz became only the fourth NHL head coach of all time to win 800 games after the New York Islanders defeated the Ottawa Senators 5-4 in a shootout.

Trotz joins Scotty Bowman, Joel Quenneville, and Ken Hitchcock as the only coaches to do so.

Winning the breakup between Barry Trotz and the Washington Capitals

The Caps’ recent losing streak and the unexpected success of the New York Islanders have spawned a curious revisionism about how the Washington Capitals and Barry Trotz parted company in the summer of 2018. A sample from our comments:

Only one is to blame. The one whole decided not to give Barry Trotz a worthy contract.

I think a lot of people here didn’t appreciate what a huge gamble the Caps were taking by letting Trotz go.

I wish they had just given Trotz the money and the term and fired him if they needed to.

There are too many myths and mistakes about what actually went down between the Stanley Cup Champions and their coach last summer. Lots of people seem to have the wrong idea about who the villain was here.

Barry Trotz surprises the Dauphin Kings with a pregame pep talk and ceremonial ‘sausage drop’

As the Manitoba Junior Hockey Leagues’ Dauphin Kings prepared to take on the Portage Terriers Saturday night, they couldn’t have predicted the surprise guest that would walk into their locker room: former Capitals and current New York Islanders head coach Barry Trotz.

Trotz entered the room to the delight of the Kings’ players and proceeded to give them a pep talk. As soon as that was done, he read the starting lineup, firing up the boys before they hit the ice.

The Washington Capitals’ tribute video for Barry Trotz, Lane Lambert, and Mitch Korn

Heading into his homecoming game against the Capitals, Barry Trotz, the team’s former coach, was worried that he’d cry during the team’s tribute video.

“I’m a softie when it comes to—I’ll cry during watching ‘The Notebook’ on TV when it’s on, [I’m] an emotional type guy,” Trotz said. “I think I’ll be okay but I appreciate the organization, the players, the fans, all the support people around the game.”

The Capitals played the tribute video during the first TV break of the first period.

The Best of Barry: highlights from Trotz’s time with the Capitals

Barry Trotz came to the Capitals in 2014 after they had failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2006-07. Trotz was the head coach of the Nashville Predators for fifteen years prior and shared the frustration of never advancing past the second round of the playoffs.

It took four years to get there, but eventually, Trotz led the Capitals to their first-ever Stanley Cup championship and win. That journey was full of its own joys and special moments, and it’s worth looking back on them as Trotz makes his return to Capital One Arena with the New York Islanders.

‘Notebook’ fan Barry Trotz says he’s a ‘softie,’ hopes Capitals tribute video doesn’t make him cry

The Washington Capitals will honor their Stanley Cup-winning coach on Friday as Barry Trotz returns to DC as bench boss of the New York Islanders — his first trip back to Capital One Arena at the helm of a new team.

“I wasn’t there that long, so I’m a little bit surprised that they would do that,” Trotz said when asked about the video tribute. “But I’m thankful and appreciative of that.”

Trotz already met with Capitals when they were on the road at Barclays Center in November and received his championship ring in an emotional locker room ceremony. But this is the first time since June that Capitals fans will have the opportunity to celebrate his contributions and success.

Tribute videos can be tearjerkers, but Trotz hopes he’ll keep it together.

Todd Reirden: Barry Trotz will get a tribute video during return to Capital One Arena

The Washington Capitals and Barry Trotz have at times been prickly towards each other since the Jack Adams Award-winning coach left the team in mid-June.

But the fences appear to be mended. Friday, the Capitals will honor the coach that led them to their only Stanley Cup with a tribute video. The game will be the first time Trotz has returned to Capital One Arena with his new team, the New York Islanders.

The news was reported by the DC Sports Bog’s Scott Allen.

Barry Trotz delivered a speech to the Capitals after receiving his championship ring. ‘It’s going to be really hard to not like you guys.’

Barry Trotz, Lane Lambert, and Mitch Korn walked into the enemy locker room at Barclays Center two hours before puck drop of the Capitals and Islanders game. They were received warmly in an emotional pregame ceremony.

“It’s going to be really hard to not like you guys, it really is,” Trotz said tearing up. “Because you’re always family.”

The three Islanders coaches were presented championship rings for their roles on Washington’s 2018 Stanley Cup-winning team. Trotz, clapping in rhythm as he first walked into the room, immediately hugged and high-fived Alex Ovechkin, before going around the entire room and saying hi to all his former players. Trotz, Lambert, and Korn all made short speeches.

“All summer I wanted to say this,” Trotz said. “We f*cking did it, okay?”

He added that he thought the Capitals could repeat as champions.

“You can do it again, too,” Trotz said before adding, “you’ll have to go through the f*cking Island.”

Barry Trotz, Lane Lambert, and Mitch Korn received their Stanley Cup rings

Entering Monday, the Capitals geared up to face the New York Islanders and former head coach Barry Trotz. Trotz resigned from the Capitals this summer to join the Isles on a 5-year, $4 million per year deal.

When asked about facing his former team, Trotz said tonight’s reunion would be “awkward” and “weird.”

Before puck drop, the Capitals presented Trotz and former assistant coaches Lane Lambert and Mitch Korn with their Stanley Cup rings. The coaching troika were unable to join the team when they gave out the rings in October.
