After given rare night off, Henrik Lundqvist and Braden Holtby have battle of flows on bench

Wednesday night’s Rivalry Night game between the Capitals and Rangers featured a battle between two of the most accomplished and handsome goaltenders in the league: Henrik Lundqvist and Braden Holtby. Except there was one tiny problem: neither star goalie played.

Instead of battling it out on the ice, the two helmetless goalies exchanged smolders on the bench. One man, a shampoo spokesman, showed off his perfect flow-y hair while the other, nicknamed for his manbeast alter ego, displayed his furry beard.

Alex Ovechkin meets Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué after Rangers game

Despite the 1-0 shootout loss to the New York Rangers, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin was all smiles after the game.

In the bowels of Madison Square Garden, Ovechkin, a soccer fanatic, met FC Barcelona’s Gerard Piqué after the game.

Philipp Grubauer sensational, earns shutout in 1-0 shootout loss

The saying always a bridesmaid, never the bride applies to Philipp Grubauer. Despite the Capitals rising to the top of the Metropolitan Division standings over the last month, the team’s backup goaltender has only won two of 13 games played this season and it’s no fault of his own.

In the eight games that he has started and not won, Grubauer has watched the Caps score only 12 goals in front of him (1.5 goals per game). That includes Wednesday’s 1-0 shootout loss to New York where Grubauer blanked the Rangers through 65 minutes and made 37 saves.

He earned a shutout and lost.

The worst ice and the best German: Rangers beat Caps 1-0

It’s freezing outside, the NHL holiday break is over, the World Junior Classic has started, the Winter Classic is close, and we had a matchup of Metro-Division foes. The end of December is definitely fun for the hockey world, but would it be fun for Caps fans on Wednesday rivalry night?

We got sloppy nothingness through twenty minutes. And then some failed power plays on both sides, but more of the same sloppy nothingness through forty minutes. Philipp Grubauer stood on his head to keep the third…also scoreless. Overtime? Nothing there either.

So here’s some shootout bullets.

Zuccarello put the biscuit in the basket.
Oshie did not put the biscuit in the basket.
Zibanejad put the biscuit in the basket.
Ovechkin did not put the biscuit in the basket.

Rangers beat Caps 1-0.

Christian Djoos struck in face by deflected puck, has gnarly cut opened up on cheek

On the first day back from the NHL’s holiday break, Capitals defenseman Christian Djoos received one final Christmas present.

Late in the third period of a tied 0-0 game, Rangers forward Pavel Buchnevich had his shot get deflected by John Carlson and strike Djoos in the face.

Caps at Rangers pregame: Un-rivalry Night

Nobody needs the reminder that the race in the Metropolitan division is very close. In fact, five points separate the division’s top five teams. The Rangers are hosting the Capitals tonight and both teams are coming off, not just the holiday break, but some pretty stinging losses.

The Rangers will want to win tonight to get ahead in the standings, but also to give them a win before they hit the road for their next five games. Might be a little hard since they’ve decided to keep Henrik Lundqvist out of the lineup. The Capitals? They will want to win because they are the best team of all time and I do not like when they lose. But, no bias here.

The game is at 8PM and NBCSN will have your TV coverage. Very important human, Chris from the comments, will have your recap. Wednesday Night Rivalry. Again.
