The Washington Capitals were tough luck losers at home on Thursday night to the Dallas Stars so two points would have done them a world of good against the Toronto Maple Leafs two days later. They got just that with an eventual 5-2 final score.
Big win.

The Toronto Maple Leafs were in town to take on the Washington Capitals inside Capital One Arena on Saturday night. Both teams were looking for bounce-back victories after having their winning streaks halted in their last games.
Erik Gustafsson opened the scoring with a bank shot off of Ilya Samsonov’s skate and William Nylander fired home a tying goal not long after. Trevor van Riemsdyk wrapped up the scoring in the first period with a bad bounce goal.
Gustafsson tallied again in the second off of a great feed from Evgeny Kuznetsov but that was again followed up by a Leafs goal this time from Auston Matthews. Garnet Hathaway added the team’s fourth and Gustafsson capped off a hat trick for the fifth.

Alex Ovechkin once checked Zdeno Chara into the bench. Now Conor Timmins had his turn.
During a raucous second period where every Ovechkin touch of the puck made the crowd make loud noises, it was a powerful Ovechkin check that will end up on the highlight-reel.
Ovechkin sent the Leafs defenseman up and over dasherboards into the Capitals’ bench after a Dylan Strome faceoff loss in the neutral zone.

It’s a Hockey Night In Canada (and in DC).
The Capitals will take on the Toronto Maple Leafs and a familiar face will be in net. Ilya Samsonov will tend the goal for the Leafs. The Russian netminder is on a ridiculous hot streak, not having given up a goal in the last 152:34.
But if there’s someone who could penetrate that Russian forcefield, it’s Alex Ovechkin who’ll once again try to tie or pass Gordie Howe.
Tonight’s game is on NBC Sports Washington. Puck drop is a litte after 7 pm.
