TJ Oshie is a Game-Time Decision After Awkward Hit in Blue Jackets Game

Capitals forward TJ Oshie is a game-time decision for tonight’s matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers, and it may be due to an awkward hit he absorbed during the game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday.

In the final minute of the second period of Sunday’s game, Oshie attempted to carry the puck into the offensive zone. While Ryan Murray and Matt Calvert tried to force a turnover, Brandon Dubinsky hit Oshie awkwardly along his side and back.

Oshie waved to the bench for a shift change and then went back to the locker room.

Tom Wilson Scores First Career Game-Winning Goal, Caps Fan Celebrates by Infinitely Air-Punching

Tom Wilson has played in 224 career NHL games. He has never scored a game-winning goal.

Monday night at Verizon Center, that changed due to some hard work and good luck. 3:46 into the third period, the fourth line forced a turnover in the defensive zone. Daniel Winnik put a shot on net. Wilson and Mike Richards crashed the net. As Richards drew a Blue Jacket’s attention in the crease, Wilson, wide open, backhanded the rebound past Sergei Bobrovski as he fell to his knees.

Barry Trotz Did Not Enjoy Dmitry Orlov’s Pizza

The Capitals gave up one goal Monday night in their 4-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. The victory clinched the President’s Trophy, but Barry Trotz wasn’t happy. He wanted a shutout.

“What I liked about us is that we didn’t give [the Blue Jackets] much,” Trotz said. “Their goal, I thought this could have have been a team shutout. I didn’t think Holts was worked too hard.”

Trotz was referring to Cam Atkinson’s 27th goal of the season that came late in the first period. The Blue Jackets forward scored after Dmitry Orlov turned the puck over in the defensive zone.

Boone Jenner’s Tooth Will Live Forever in the Verizon Center Ice

Monday night, we had another example of a hockey player being super tough during the Capitals-Blue Jackets game. Columbus forward Boone Jenner got hit in the face by a teammate’s shot while skating through the crease looking for a rebound. Jenner bled all over his jersey and lost two or three teeth. He went to the locker room for repairs.

It’s nasty.

Gr8est: The Caps Have Won the Presidents’ Trophy

The Washington Capitals have won the Presidents’ Trophy. That’s the one you get when you get more regular-season standings points than any other team. The regular season still has two weeks left, but nobody can catch the Capitals at this point. The Caps will have have home ice during the entirety of the playoffs.

It’s totally bonkers.

Best in the League: Caps beat Blue Jackets 4-1

Hey, the Caps have the best record in the league. How bout that? They shook off their 5v5 funk against Lumbus, recording even-strength goals from the best and second best heads of hair on the Washington roster (you decide which is which) and locking it down late.

Sixteen minutes into the first period, Justin Williams cracked a long 5v5 goal slump with a second effort after John Carlson’s rebound. That was nifty, but Cam Atkinson leveled the score two minutes later.

The second period was silent, but Tom Wilson recorded his seventh goal in the third period, a backhander from the bottom six. The Caps added insurance with a power-play goal ostensibly by Matt Niskanen but tapped in by TJ Oshie. Nick Backstrom secured an empty netter to hit the 20-goal mark and make Swedish heritage night just a bit sweeter.

Caps vs Blue Jackets Pregame: One Point from the Prez

The Caps got stomped by the Blues on Saturday night. Defensive breakdowns (and bad shooting/saving percentages) sunk a decent effort, so the Caps will try again tonight against the Blue Jackets, who, I’m told, are a totally different team than the Blues. I’m not so sure, but I guess we’ll find out tonight at 7 PM on CSN-DC.
