The Washington Capitals have won the Presidents’ Trophy. That’s the one you get when you get more regular-season standings points than any other team. The regular season still has two weeks left, but nobody can catch the Capitals at this point. The Caps will have have home ice during the entirety of the playoffs.
It’s totally bonkers.
8 of those teams won the Cup? 🤔 Maybe we have a chance after all! 🤗 pic.twitter.com/PmeFj11Ihj

This is the second Presidents’ Trophy in Washington’s history. The last one came in 2010*. Then the Caps lost in the first round.

Which, frankly, is a pee-pants attitude. Having the best regular-season record is an important feat, and the Capitals have locked it down with two weeks to spare. And anyway, in history, the best regular-season team has better chance at the ultimate prize than the other 15 teams in the playoffs.
