I was going to give this story a sexy title like: TJ Oshie Goes Top Shelf, Unstoppable In Shootout, but the Caps shootout victory over the Ducks was a true team victory. For those who stayed up until 1 AM last night, you know what I mean.
Late in overtime, the Washington Capitals had a chance to end the game when the Anaheim Ducks took a too-many-men penalty. It gave the Caps a four-on-three power play, which they frittered away 16 seconds later when TJ Oshie closed his hand on the puck.
On the live telecast, you could see Caps captain Alex Ovechkin protesting the delay of game penalty by standing directly in front of official Gord Dwyer who was trying to announce the call. Dwyer seemed testy, waving his arms around all willy nilly at Ovechkin, but it was nothing too out of the ordinary.

Tom Wilson is a man who loves to chirp. At the end of the first period, Wilson, skating approximately 100 MPH, approached a scrum that was dying down. Except Wilson didn’t make his final destination because linesman Trent Knorr was having none of it.
If you thought Monday’s late start would shake the Caps of their first period misery, you were wrong. The Caps trail 1-0 after twenty minutes, and it could have been far worse if not for Mike Weber’s stout defense against the Anaheim Ducks’ 4-on-1 rush.
That’s lovely, but how did the Caps allow a FOUR ON ONE rush to happen in the first place?

RMNB reader @Jbobrow just made a great observation on Twitter. This afternoon, the Washington Capitals shared a photo of the team’s stick rack on Snapchat. Take a look at Tom Wilson‘s twigs.
The hottest team in the league will play tonight, and it ain’t the Washington Capitals. The Anaheim Ducks have won 11 games in a row. They’re ranked higher than the Caps in 5v5 possession and penalty killing. (It’s a virtual tie on the power play.) Plus they’ve got Bruce Boudreau behind the bench. After a miserable start to the season, the Ducks are now exactly where smart people knew they’d end up, and maybe even a little higher than that.
The Ducks right now are my pick out of the West to make the finals*. Tonight the Caps will try to beat them on their own turf.
It’s a late game, 10 PM on CSN. I’ll be staying up with you, cracking jokes.
