The Washington Capitals announced Thursday afternoon that forward Anthony Mantha will not play against the Montreal Canadiens due to a lower-body injury.
With both Mantha and TJ Oshie out of the lineup, the Capitals will play the Habs with only 11 forwards.

Former Capital Erik Gustafsson is back with the Toronto Maple Leafs after spending time away on personal leave. Gustafsson, who was traded from the Capitals shortly before the trade deadline, had returned to Washington to deal with an undisclosed family matter.
On Thursday, Gustafsson told David Alter of The Hockey News that the leave was due to a health crisis for his youngest daughter, Lusie, who was dealing with undiagnosed celiac disease. Thankfully, the 18 month-old Lusie is now doing much better.

The Washington Capitals were officially eliminated from making a playoff spot this season on Tuesday night. It’s a strange position for this team, which has made the postseason every year since 2014 and is now set to complete their worst season in 16 years.
Captain Alex Ovechkin spoke to the media on Thursday, giving his first comments on the team’s elimination. This season marks only the second time during Ovechkin’s captaincy that the team failed to make the playoffs.

Beloved former Capital Devante Smith-Pelly returned to DC back in February, dropping the ceremonial first puck for the Caps’ Black history celebration.

The Toronto Maple Leafs held their Pride Night celebration Tuesday night, celebrating equality and inclusion in the hockey community. Though the Leafs have never worn dedicated Pride jerseys, the team did create helmet decals featuring a rainbow version of the Leafs logo.
Former Capitals goaltender Ilya Samsonov, however, did not wear the decal, with the team citing concerns for the safety of Samsonov and his family in Russia. He was the only member of the Leafs not to use the decal.

The Washington Capitals are still without TJ Oshie and Trevor van Riemsdyk due to upper-body injuries. Both missed Sunday’s match against the New York Rangers, and it looks like that won’t change in the near future.
After practice on Tuesday, Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette provided an update on the two’s status. Neither will travel with the team to Montreal for Thursday’s game against the Canadiens.

The Capitals lost-badly-on Sunday afternoon, but the game wasn’t entirely without bright spots. Dylan Strome tallied his 58th point, setting a new career high for the 26-year-old center.
He earned the point with a goal midway through the second period with a skillful deflected shot.

Former Capitals goaltender Ilya Samsonov and his wife Maria became parents last week, welcoming their son Miroslav into the world. After some time away for the birth, Samsonov returned to action with the Toronto Maple Leafs this week.
Samsonov has been all smiles when speaking about his son. He’s even found that Miroslav eases the pains of a rough loss.

For former Capital Devante Smith-Pelly, the team’s 2018 Stanley Cup win is never far from his mind. He spoke with Alan May and Alexa Landestoy last Thursday on NBC Sports Washington, reflecting back as we near the five-year anniversary of that magical run for the Cup.
“I’ve watched all those games front to back so many times,” Smith-Pelly said. “It’s actually crazy.”

The Washington Capitals dropped their third straight game in an unimpressive 5-1 showing against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Thursday. At no point in any of the three games did the Capitals hold a lead, and their offense has been limited to a single goal in two straight. For a team ostensibly still trying to make the playoffs, the performance failed to engender hope for a miraculous turnaround.
After yet another collapse, Nick Jensen expressed frustration with the team’s effort as they attempted to make a last stand.
