Rasmus Sandin spotted back in Toronto watching Maple Leafs practice after Capitals season ends

With the Capitals’ season over, Rasmus Sandin is back in Toronto to visit his former team. Sandin was spotted at the Maple Leafs’ morning skate as they prepare for their first-round series against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Sandin played most of the season with the Leafs before coming to Washington at the trade deadline. According to a semi-viral tweet from Chris Johnston, Sandin was back in Toronto to “pack my s%#^.”

Carl Hagelin reveals pupil in injured eye will never dilate again after terrifying practice injury

Amidst the Capitals’ rash of injuries this season, it would be easy to forget about Carl Hagelin, who has been out of the lineup for over a full year. He suffered a truly frightening injury during a March of 2022 practice that nearly required doctors to remove his left eye. Just as it looked like he could return, he instead went back under the knife, undergoing both arthroscopic and hip resurfacing surgery this season.

At the Capitals’ Breakdown Day on Saturday, he gave more details on recovery from the grisly eye injury, deciding on hip resurfacing, and staying positive through a four-surgery year.

Nic Dowd may need surgery over the summer, will watch Paw Patrol over playoff hockey

At the Capitals’ Breakdown Day on Saturday, veteran center Nic Dowd revealed that he could require surgery over the offseason.

Dowd missed the final three games of the season with an undisclosed injury. It marked the second prolonged absence of his season; he had missed 16 games earlier in the season following a big hit from the New York Islanders’ Cal Clutterbuck.

Tom Wilson reveals he missed time due to a ‘small, small fracture’ in his ankle

The start of Tom Wilson’s 2022-23 season was largely defined by injury. He missed the first half of the season recovering from surgery to repair a torn ACL. After making his triumphant return in January, he lasted only eight games before another injury took him out of the lineup for several weeks.

At the Capitals’ Breakdown Day on Saturday, he revealed that his second absence came from a broken ankle he sustained in January.

“I had a small, small fracture on my [ankle]” he said. “That wasn’t ideal either.”

TJ Oshie’s back injury required a minimally-invasive procedure after the season: ‘I feel already a light-year’s difference’

At the Capitals’ breakdown day, TJ Oshie revealed that he had a procedure to address his lingering back injury. The procedure was performed on Friday following the conclusion of the Caps’ season.

“I did a procedure yesterday,” Oshie said. “Double ablation, I guess it’s called.

“Basically, relieving the pain in the two levels, or one level on both sides that has given me problems in the past,” Oshie explained. “[It’s] not necessarily considered surgery, because I hopped up and drove home. Extremely minor. It was quick. It was like, five minutes.. from start time to start finish. I don’t think it’s simple, but to me, it seemed like it was just quick.”

Peter Laviolette out as Capitals head coach

The Washington Capitals announced that head coach Peter Laviolette will not return to the team after deciding to mutually part ways.

The team made the announcement on Friday shortly after 5 pm.

Craig Anderson announces retirement after emotional final NHL win

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Craig Anderson announced on Thursday night that he’s hanging up the skates after a 20-year NHL career. Though he did not formally confirm his retirement until after the game, the Sabres gave their goalie a proper sendoff in his last NHL start.

The former Capitals goaltender finished his career with 319 total NHL wins. He is one of only 39 goaltenders to win 300 or more games. Fittingly, Anderson’s final start came against the Ottawa Senators, with whom he spent 10 seasons.

Reid Cooper was sitting on his couch watching Bourne Supremacy with his college roommates when he got the call from the Capitals

Without Charlie Lindgren available due to injury, the Capitals were facing a conundrum heading into their final game of the season against the New Jersey Devils. The team is capped out and could not call up a goaltender from AHL Hershey to back up Darcy Kuemper.

So the team made a call to Curry College goaltender Reid Cooper and signed the student to an amateur tryout offer.

Cooper took the ice for the Caps’ morning skate on Thursday. In the locker room afterward, he said that the Capitals first made contact with him while he was watching The Bourne Supremacy — the second movie of the Matt Damon Bourne series — with his college roommates. He added that he was sitting on the couch, which feels like an important detail to note.

Jack Eichel’s new take on the ‘Vegas Flu’ introduces the concept of ‘guilty games’

One of the biggest narratives surrounding the arrival of the Vegas Golden Knights to the NHL was that visiting teams could underperform playing against them due to the many distractions of Sin City.

For young, wealthy NHL players, there’s plenty to do in Vegas besides focusing on hockey including gambling, concerts, and nightlife. With all of that temptation, the media coined the phrase “Vegas Flu” in 2017 to explain the expansion Golden Knights winning six of their first seven games and off performances by away teams.

Golden Knights forward Jack Eichel was a guest on The Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday and was asked if the Vegas Flu is a real thing and if he’s ever smelled liquor on an opposing player.

Garnet Hathaway and Dmitry Orlov help Bruins set new single-season points record as they reunite with former Caps teammates

Tuesday night’s game against the Boston Bruins saw a reunion with old friends as the Capitals continue to close out their season. The Caps faced both Garnet Hathaway and Dmitry Orlov for the first time since the two were dealt to the Bruins before the trade deadline.

The two had the opportunity to catch up with their former teammates at the game. Hathaway did himself one better, scoring a goal to put the Bruins up 4-2.
