ARLINGTON, VA — Sonny Milano has watched most of the season from the press box after sustaining an upper-body injury on November 6 against the Nashville Predators. Though he’s spent the last five months progressing towards recovery, starting to skate again in December and shedding his no-contact jersey in late February, Milano has not skated with the team in several days, suggesting a possible setback.

Head coach Spencer Carbery didn’t provide details when asked about Milano on Friday, but suggested the team would soon offer clarity on his status.

“We’ll have an update on Sonny coming, I’m sure, pretty soon,” he said. “But him not skating has sort of changed what the progression would look like.”

Before Milano stopped participating in the team’s skates, Capitals general manager Chris Patrick noted that he still had a ways to go in his recovery despite getting out of his no-contact jersey and becoming a full participant in practice.

“Sonny will factor [into the team’s plans],” he said last week. “We’ll have to talk with Sonny and see where he is and see how he’s feeling and try to figure out his timeline. I mean, I think the move to a (contact) jersey was not necessarily meaning he’s imminent to return.”

Milano spent much of the early season as a healthy scratch, playing just three games before sustaining his injury and recording no points in that span. He earned 23 points (15g, 8a) in 2023-24 and has one full year left on his contract, earning $1.9 million per season.
