Zach Hyman scores playoff goal with his face: I’ll ‘take that trade-off any day’

To get a goal in the Stanley Cup playoffs, sometimes you have to use your head.

The Edmonton Oilers’ Zach Hyman took that adage literally during Game Five against the LA Kings Tuesday night when he scored a goal with his face.

The marker came during the power play when Hyman deflected an Evan Bouchard slap shot off of his chin and into the back of the net. It was far from the prettiest goal of his career, but it counted all the same.

Kings’ Gabriel Vilardi signs stick for fan hit by puck during warmups: ‘Sorry I smoked you in the head ☹️’

When Kings fan Dylan Smith went with his girlfriend Emma to watch the Los Angeles Kings face off against the Edmonton Oilers for Game Three on Friday, the couple was prepared for plenty of excitement. But when they went down to watch the Kings during warmups, that action got a little too real when a puck shot by Kings center Gabriel Vilardi hit Emma directly in the head.

With Emma okay and recovering before the game, word got out to Vilardi about her injury. The Kings forward wasn’t going to let her leave empty-handed.

Both Emma and Dylan got the surprise of a lifetime when they were told by staff Vilardi had gifted them a stick, complete with his own personal apology.

Jonas Siegenthaler’s first career playoff goal is a game-winner: ‘He gave us a heck of a game tonight’

The New Jersey Devils got some unexpected help on the scoreboard in Game Four, Monday night.

Former Capital Jonas Siegenthaler tallied his first career playoff goal in the third period, scoring the game-winner for New Jersey.

Angry goaltender alert: Linus Ullmark tried to fight Matthew Tkachuk, chucks blocker and glove

It’s been a week of unexpected truculence during Round One of the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The latest example came in Game Three of the Bruins-Panthers series during a net-front battle with less than five minutes to go. A fracas broke out and it almost led to a fight between Florida’s Matthew Tkachuk and Boston’s Linus Ullmark.

Ullmark didn’t want a piece of Tkachuk, he wanted the whole dang pie.

Alex Ovechkin and family return to Russia with a small mountain of luggage

Alex Ovechkin is officially on his way back to Moscow. After eight straight years of making the playoffs, it’s an unusually long offseason for the Capitals captain and his family, and it looks like they’re prepared for the trip.

Nastya Ovechkina posted a video from the airport Sunday morning showing the four carts full of luggage the family is bringing with them back to Russia.

“When your vacation is 4 months 😅” writes Nastya.

Vitek Vanecek benched for Game Three as Akira Schmid gets first playoff start

Former Capital Vitek Vanecek is out of the starters’ net for New Jersey. Akira Schmid earned his first career playoff start in Game Three against the New York Rangers.

The Devils have floundered in their first two playoff games, losing both at home with a score of 5-1. Vanecek has only a .827 save percentage in that span, giving up nine goals on 52 shots. He served as the team’s backup as the series moved to Madison Square Garden on Saturday.

Chandler Stephenson helped Morgan Barron after skate blade to face necessitated 75 stitches: ‘It was obviously a really classy move’

Game One between the Vegas Golden Knights and Winnipeg Jets turned scary midway through the first period. Jets forward Morgan Barron took a skate blade to the face during a pile-up in front of Vegas’ net.

Former Capital Chandler Stephenson, who had inadvertently pushed Barron down, immediately saw what had happened. Visibly concerned, he helped his opponent up in a touching display of sportsmanship.

Taylor Wilson runs beach volleyball clinic for aspiring players with special guest Tom Wilson

Tom Wilson has traded in the ice rink for the beach volleyball court with the Capitals’ season over.

Earlier this week, Tom joined his wife Taylor Wilson, a professional volleyball player, as she put on a clinic for several young players. The two also took the chance to show off in a 1v1 tournament, where Taylor came out victorious.

Fox 5 anchor Angie Goff shared the event on Twitter. Her daughter Adora participated in the clinic.

Connor Brown heard his knee pop when he tore his ACL: ‘I’ve never really felt anything like that’

Connor Brown’s season changed just four games into his tenure with the Capitals.

With Tom Wilson set to begin the year out of the lineup, the Caps traded for Brown to shore up their depth on the right wing. By mid-October, Brown suffered the same injury Wilson had incurred, a torn ACL, and just like that, Brown’s season was done.

At the Capitals’ Breakdown Day on Saturday, Brown said that he figured that his season was over as soon as he was hit in that fateful game.

Zdeno Chara, wearing bib number 3333, completes Boston Marathon in 3:38:23

Zdeno Chara joined around 30,000 other athletes as he competed in the annual Boston Marathon on Monday.

The legendary Boston Bruin and former Capital towered over his competition in his first-ever marathon. He finished the marathon with a 3:38:23 time wearing bib number 3333, a tribute to his longtime #33 jersey number. He averaged 8:20 per mile.

Even in dreary weather, fans cheered for their 46-year-old former captain as he crossed the finish line. Marathon organizers played the Bruins’ goal song (”Kernkraft 400” by Zombie Nation) to celebrate his accomplishment.
