Capitals credit top players, team chemistry with 6-3 win: ‘We weren’t going to lose that game’

Saturday afternoon, the Capitals snapped a six-game losing streak in a high-offense endeavor versus the New York Rangers. Evgeny Kuznetsov and TJ Oshie each scored two goals in the game, with the latter earning his first career Gordie Howe hat trick. Postgame, Capitals players and Head Coach Peter Laviolette reflected on the win before turning their focus to Sunday’s game in Buffalo.

“It’s a big game,” said Laviolette. “I think guys knew that, and they responded well. I thought everybody was on point right from the start. Sometimes a one o’clock game can catch you, but I thought our guys were really good right from the first three, four shifts.”

The quintessential TJ Oshie game: two goals, one assist, and a fight. His first career Gordie Howe hat trick.

Even if it’s impossible, TJ Oshie seems determined to drag this Washington Capitals team into a playoff spot kicking and screaming. Saturday’s match against the New York Rangers marked Oshie’s 500th NHL game with the Capitals, and what a game he had.

Capitals players sad about Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway trade: ‘These guys are like brothers to us’

Just after 6 PM Thursday night, the Washington Capitals announced officially that they sent both Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway to the Boston Bruins.

Less than an hour later, the puck dropped for the team’s game versus the Anaheim Ducks. While the trade was not surprising, the timing of it — more than a week before the trade deadline — was. It represented a cold, turning point for a team that has so far desperately tried to remain in playoff contention.

For Capitals players, it also meant the sudden loss of two close teammates and friends.

TJ Oshie on Alex Ovechkin’s return: ‘He’s going to have an angel watching over him tonight’

When Alex Ovechkin returns to the ice Thursday night, TJ Oshie knows he won’t do it alone.

Captain Alexander Ovechkin is set to make his return against the Anaheim Ducks following the death of his father, Mikhail.

“I think it’ll make for an emotional return,” said Oshie, “He’s our leader, our captain. It’ll be super important to get him back. Just having him being around the guys, I think that alone will bring the spark that maybe we need to get out of this rut we’re in.”

Report: Alex Ovechkin expected back in Capitals lineup later this week

Alex Ovechkin’s personal leave will soon end.

ESPN’s Emily Kaplan is reporting that the Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin will likely be back in the Capitals lineup beginning with either Thursday’s game versus the Anaheim Ducks or Saturday’s game versus the New York Rangers.

Ovechkin has been away from the Capitals since Tuesday, following the hospitalization and death of his father, Mikhail, at the age of 71.

Liam Reigel joins Capitals for Make-a-Wish skate, scores goal on Darcy Kuemper with play-by-play from Joe Beninati

On Monday, the Capitals partnered with Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic to bring a little bit of magic to the ice, welcoming Liam Reigel to MedStar Capitals Iceplex.

Reigel, who hails from Eldersburg, Maryland, met with his favorite player Lars Eller, then laced up his skates and joined the rest of the team for the end of practice.

‘It’s not working:’ The Capitals react to their brutal 4-1 Stadium Series loss

After a three-game skid, the Washington Capitals hoped a change of scenery would revitalize the team as they faced the Carolina Hurricanes at NC State’s Carter-Finley Stadium. That did not happen. Instead, the Caps must now reckon with a four-game losing streak during which they have not held a lead.

Following their 4-1 loss to the Canes on Saturday night, Capitals players and head coach Peter Laviolette spoke to the media and tried to explain what went wrong and what this team needs to do moving forward.

“I don’t think concern is the right word,” TJ Oshie said. “I think our playoff hockey probably starts in this next week here, otherwise, we’re gonna be on the outside looking in.”

Nic Dowd throws football to fans in crowd before Stadium Series game

With nearly 57,000 fans at NC State’s Carter-Finley Stadium for Saturday night’s Stadium Series game, Nic Dowd got a few of them into some pre-game fun.

Dowd, who remains out of the lineup following an injury during January 16th’s game against the New York Islanders, was spotted tossing a football back and forth with fans near the ice.

Tom Wilson offered to be Vince Backstrom’s agent. Nicklas Backstrom is not so sure about that idea.

Ovi Jr isn’t the only Caps kid that is getting attention for his advanced hockey skill. Nicke Jr is, too.

In fact, Nicklas Backstrom’s son Vince has wowed Tom Wilson so much with his ability that he offered to work as Vince’s agent.

Wilson made the comments after Friday night’s family skate.

While Wilson seemed confident it’d work out due to his close connections with Nicklas Backstrom and his family, the Capitals’ Swedish center wasn’t as sure.

The Capitals held an adorable family skate after their Stadium Series practice. A juice box even made it out on the ice. 🧃

Following the Washington Capitals’ practice at NC State’s Carter-Finley Stadium Friday night, the team had the opportunity for an outdoor family skate.

Even after the day’s festivities began with a rain delay, the skate was highly attended, with many of the players’ partners and children in attendance.
