The Washington Capitals made their second move on Thursday, sending defenseman Declan Chisholm to the New Jersey Devils for a 2027 fourth-round draft pick.
Chisholm departs just hours after the Caps also traded forward Hendrix Lapierre to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
According to Monumental Sports Network’s Tarik El-Bashir, Chisholm wanted a “full-time opportunity” elsewhere, and the Capitals accommodated his wishes.
Chisholm played just one season with the Capitals after they acquired him and a sixth-round pick from the Minnesota Wild for the contract rights to Chase Priskie and a fourth-round pick. He got into 26 games for the Caps, recording seven points (1g, 6a) and averaging 13:43 of ice time per game.
The 26-year-old rearguard was due to earn $1.6 million against the salary cap next season and then become an unrestricted free agent. With the move, the Capitals are currently set to have just six healthy defensemen on their roster to start next year: Jakob Chychrun, Martin Fehervary, Matt Roy, Timothy Liljegren, Cole Hutson, and Dylan McIlrath.
After taking Chisholm’s salary off the books, the Capitals have just over $14.3 million in cap space. They also now own nine draft picks in next year’s draft.
