The Washington Wizards had a few extra special guests at their game against the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night.
After helping the Washington Capitals earn a day off from head coach Spencer Carbery, captain Alex Ovechkin brought his sons Sergei and Ilya to Capital One Arena to watch some hoops. There, they got to witness another sporting legend, LeBron James, play what could be his final game in DC. James is undecided on whether this will be his final NBA season, just like Ovechkin in the NHL.
The two mini Ovechkins sported Capitals’ hats with the team’s old Capitol Dome logo, autographed by their father.
Recent Wizards trade acquisition Trae Young showed his respect with Ovechkin in the house, rocking a road Caps jersey to the game. Young, a four-time NBA All-Star with the Atlanta Hawks, is currently sidelined for the foreseeable future with a sprained right MCL and a bruised right quadriceps.
Young, who is to be evaluated during the upcoming All-Star break for a possible return later in the season, met Ovechkin and was introduced to Sergei and Ilya. The former NBA assists leader could be heard telling Ovechkin that he plans on coming to a Capitals game soon.
The two stars posed for a photo taken by Zach Leonsis, son of Capitals and Wizards owner Ted Leonsis and President of Media & New Enterprises for the two teams’ parent organization, Monumental Sports & Entertainment. Ovechkin sat courtside next to Leonsis during the game.
Ovechkin also wasn’t the only Capitals player in attendance; winger Aliaksei Protas was there with his family.
The Capitals play the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night.
The rebuilding Wizards spent most of the game getting dominated by Lakers star Luka Doncic. The Slovenian guard had 37 points in LA’s 142-111 victory. He was aided by James, who had 20 points in almost 30 minutes of game time, and center Deandre Ayton, who had 28 points.
