Live updates: Washington Capitals vs Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena

The Washington Capitals will get a second shot at the Detroit Red Wings after getting destroyed in front of their home fans on Saturday.

Spencer Carbery, rightfully so, has completely blown up the team’s lines looking for a spark. We’ll see Justin Sourdif centering the first line with Connor McMichael and Alex Ovechkin while I have a keen eye on the third trio that features Ivan Miroshnichenko, Hendrix Lapierre, and Ethen Frank.

Charlie Lindgren will start today for the Capitals and oppose Cam Talbot in net.

Puck drop for today’s game is scheduled for a little after 1 pm. Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin will have the call on Monumental Sports Network.

Caps get a break! Ethen skates by a Red Wings defender — Albert Johansson who fell down trying to stick with him down the right wing — and scores on a semi-breakaway, going backhand through Talbot’s five hole.

Elmer Soderblom takes a deflected puck to the face from Matt Roy. Roy was getting frustrated with the officials for not blowing the whistle quicker. Soderblom lost a lot of blood in the corner. The trainer is helping him off the ice. Hope he’s okay.

Ethen Frank with a perfect seam pass to a wide open Beauvillier on a rush, but Beauvi rings the pipe hard.

Lindgren with a huge save on a deflected slot shot right at the buzzer. Whoa.

At intermission: The Capitals lead 1-0. The Capitals are outshooting the Red Wings 14 to 6.

2nd Period

Puck is dropped.

Lucas Raymond skates across the slot and puts a shot to the far side of the net, but Lindgren makes the save.

Miro throwing everything on net. Love his game today.

Brandon Duhaime to the box for tripping at 7:22. Red Wings go to the power play.

Mo Seider hits the post seconds into the man advantage.

Raymond beats a screened Lindgren from the top of the right circle.

John Leonard nearly scores on the next shift.

DeBrincat turns and fires from the side boards and the puck deflects off John Leonard and in.

This game is starting to swing heavy back to the Red Wings.

Cam Talbot turns away an Ovechkin shot off a Capitals faceoff win.

At intermission: Detroit now leads 2-1. Capitals still lead in shots 22 to 18.

3rd Period

Puck is dropped.

Great passing play by the Capitals, but Dylan Strome can’t finish near the net as Cam Talbot makes a huge save.

Red Wings with multiple chances. This game is again teetering.

Chychrun wide open in the slot and he completely misses the net.

Martin Fehervary set up wide open near the net and he misses a wide open net.

A random stick laying on the ice in the Caps offensive zone breaks up two chances. lol

Ethen Frank gets high-sticked, no call.

Appleton gets high-sticked by a teammate… the officials raised their arm….the correct call is being made here, no penalty.

Great pass by John Carlson to Frank in the slot and he beats Talbot to the five-hole for a second time today.

Danielson stopped by Lindgren on a makeshift 2-on-0. lol how did that happen. Sandin was backchecking hard which helped force him on the backhand there.

Ethen Frank with a nice backhanded attempt going for the hat trick.

Beauvillier continues his horrid game — he has a wide open attempt near the net and his stick breaks in half.

At the end of regulation: We’re going to overtime. Shots are 32 to 21.

Overtime

Puck is dropped.

Dylan Larkin has a breakaway. He’s stopped by Lindgren, but Dylan Strome took a hooking penalty at 35 seconds of OT.

Fehervary gets a clear with 1:08 remaining in the penalty.

Raymond with a huge shot, but Lindgren makes a glove save low to the ice.

I’m pretty sure Ethen Frank didn’t get a shift in OT. Will confirm in a second. How Sourdif is out there over him, when he has two goals today, is beyond me.
