Matt Rempe will be sticking around in the Metropolitan Division for at least another two years.
The New York Rangers inked the oft-controversial forward to a two-year, $1.95 million contract extension on Wednesday morning. Rempe was set to be a restricted free agent this summer.
The 22-year-old forward recorded eight points (3g, 5a) in 42 games for the Rangers this past season. Despite playing in just over half of the team’s games, Rempe still led the Rangers with 67 penalty minutes and finished sixth in hits (117).
Rempe also played 18 AHL games for the Hartford Wolf Pack, recording five points (3g, 2a).
The towering, six-foot-nine and 255-pound winger has gotten himself into near-constant trouble with NHL Player Safety just 59 games into his NHL career. This past December, Rempe was ejected from a game against the Dallas Stars after a hit from behind that drove defenseman Miro Heiskanen’s face and head into the glass.
For the hit, Rempe received a game misconduct, was given a five-minute major penalty for elbowing, and was ultimately suspended for eight games by the league. He threw two other questionable hits during the year, one on Nashville Predators defenseman Nick Blankenburg and another on St. Louis Blues forward Jake Neighbours, but was not suspended for either.
Rempe also had two notable run-ins with Washington Capitals players during the 2024-25 season, first being demolished in an October fight against Caps defenseman Dylan McIlrath. He later exchanged fiery words and shoves with Tom Wilson in March after Wilson took exception to Rempe trying to hit Caps captain Alex Ovechkin.
The new, two-year contract will see Rempe paid $975k against the salary cap and become an RFA again after the 2027-28 campaign.
