Tom Wilson was the hero in the Washington Capitals’ 4-2 comeback win over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday after scoring twice, including the game-winning goal, in the third period. But it was his grotesquely swollen jaw that got most of the attention on social media — and even inside the Capitals locker room.
Earning the nickname Quagmire — a nod to the character with a huge face on Family Guy, Wilson was named the team’s player of the game and received their gaudy gold chain. Spencer Carbery, in awe, described Wilson’s face as if he had a softball on the side of it.
While the mood in the locker room was jubilant, one player appeared to have some guilt. And on the way back to DC, he extended his apologies.
“Love this guy,” Capitals defenseman Jakob Chychrun wrote on his Instagram Story over top a photo of Wilson’s swollen face. “Absolute nail gun. Way to carry us brotha @tomwilson. P.S. I’m sorry 😭😭🤍”

Chychrun was the player who accidentally struck Wilson in the side of the face with a shot as the forward skated across the crease in the first period. Wilson, however, only missed a little over four minutes of game time as he got checked out in the locker room.
Wilson also got props from Dylan Strome on Instagram. “Well deserved 2 🚨 for this legend on HNIC 🐐,” Strome wrote.
Original dawg Brandon Duhaime also had some kind words: “Absolute Warrior @tomwilson.” Duhaime also added a dog and squirrel emoji.
Wilson, seeing all the love on social media, made sure to reply himself, revealing that his face “was on the mend.”

What a team.
