With a big question mark in their crease heading into Saturday’s game against the Buffalo Sabres, the Washington Capitals turned to the AHL’s Hershey Bears for reinforcements.

The Capitals recalled goaltender Mitch Gibson from the Bears after Logan Thompson missed Friday’s practice with a lower-body injury. Caps head coach Spencer Carbery said post-skate that Thompson remains out day-to-day and his status for Saturday’s game was still up in the air.

With the team likely to activate Pierre-Luc Dubois from injured reserve for the game against Buffalo, they also placed defenseman Vincent Desharnais on IR to free up a roster spot for Gibson. Desharnais is set to miss the next 4 to 6 weeks after undergoing an appendectomy this week.

Gibson’s recall comes after an uneven start to his season in Hershey. In his first start against the Texas Stars, the 27-year-old backstop made 24 saves on 25 shots faced in a blowout 6-1 win for the Bears. He struggled in his second start against the Providence Bruins this past weekend, allowing six goals on 34 shots in a 6-1 loss.

The 2018 fourth-round pick has yet to make his on-ice NHL debut but previously served as a backup with the Capitals. Last season, Gibson made 23 appearances for the Bears, posting a 9-9-5 record with a 2.94 goals-against average, a .903 save percentage, and one shutout.

Gibson signed a two-year, two-way extension with the Capitals last February. The Bears have already filled his roster spot in Hershey by recalling Garin Bjorklund from South Carolina.
