Joe Snively is leaving the Washington Capitals organization after six seasons which included back-to-back Calder Cup championships with the AHL’s Hershey Bears.
The former Little Cap signed a one-year, $775,000 contract with the Detroit Red Wings late on Monday. Snively is the second member of the 2024 champion Bears to depart after Jimmy Huntington signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins earlier on the first day of NHL Free Agency.

Snively, a Herndon, Virginia native, was Hershey’s leading scorer during the regular season with 59 points (14g, 45a) and chipped in an additional 18 points (4g, 14a) in 20 playoff games. He finished behind just Hendrix Lapierre (22 points) in the AHL’s postseason scoring race. He was also Hershey’s top playoff performer in 2023, tallying 15 points (2g, 13a) in 20 games.
The 28-year-old Snively has been in the Capitals’ organization since finishing up with Yale University in 2019. He made his NHL debut with the big club during the 2021-22 campaign and has played in 27 total NHL games, amassing 11 points (6g, 5a).
Snively scored his first NHL goal with Washington against the Montreal Canadiens in February of 2022.
Snively was reportedly attracting interest from teams in the KHL before wrapping up his final year with the Bears. His contract came to an end with the Capitals this summer after signing two separate extensions to remain in the organization for the past three seasons.
Good luck in Detroit, Joe!
