Playoff shutouts are a rare achievement. After Game Five against Carolina, Holtby now has seven out of 18 total in Capitals playoff history. Here are the Capitals playoff shutouts, courtesy of Hockey-reference.com.
| Capitals goaltender | Playoff shutouts |
| Braden Holtby | 7 |
| Olaf Kolzig | 6 |
| Don Beaupre | 2 |
| Semyon Varlamov | 2 |
| Michal Neuvirth | 1 |
After the win, Holtby pointed to the successful kill of John Carlson’s questionable goaltender interference penalty in second period as the turning point of the game. Holtby laid praise on the Capitals’ composure and forecheck, and downplayed his own accomplishment.
Holtby was asked about what a shutout can do mentally for the confidence of a goaltender in the playoffs.
“Nothing,” Holtby said. “It’s a win. We regroup, we know they’re going to come back harder next game and we focus on that.”
After being asked what it meant for him to set a franchise record, Holtby replied, “I don’t know. It means I’m getting old.”
