After recording seventh shutout, Braden Holtby ties Peter Budaj for the league lead

Braden Holtby won the Vezina Trophy last season, and now he’s making the case to repeat this year.

Tuesday night at Verizon Center, the Holtbeast recorded 23 saves, leading the Caps to a 5-0 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. The shutout was Holtby’s seventh of the season, tying the Lloydminster, Saskatchewan native with the Los Angeles Kings’ Peter Budaj.

The shutout was Holtby’s 30th of his career, pulling him within five of Olie Kolzig for the franchise lead.

The Capitals have recorded ten shutouts as a team — Philipp Grubuaer also has three — and have given up the least amount of goals in the league (114). During the Caps last eight home games, they have five shutouts and allowed six goals. The Caps have six shuouts since January 1.

In Braden Holtby’s last 12 decisions, he’s undefeated — 12-0-0 — with four shutouts over that stretch.
