Rocked like a hurricane: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals five-game overall winning streak and seven-game home winning streak have both been ended by the Carolina Hurricanes after a 4-1 loss at Capital One Arena.

The Hurricanes out-shot the Caps 30 to 21 and out-attempted them at five-on-five 49 to 44.

  • Michal Kempny‘s goal in the second period was his first as a Washington Capitals player.
  • John Carlson‘s assist on Kempny’s goal was his 50th of the season, the eighth time a Caps defenseman has achieved that feat. The other seven occurrences were recorded by a group including Mike Green, Kevin Hatcher, Larry Murphy, and Scott Stevens.
  • The fourth line of Jay Beagle (25 percent), Chandler Stephenson (14.3 percent), and Brett Connolly (14.3 percent) did not have a good night. Not one of the three was able to record over a 25 percent shot attempt percentage at five-on-five.
  • Lars Eller played in his 600th NHL game.
  • The Nationals and Orioles are both 1-0 to start their respective seasons.
