Logan Thompson misses Capitals practice, out day-to-day after suffering lower-body injury against Kings

Logan Thompson did not join his Washington Capitals teammates for practice on Wednesday morning.

Before the skate, the Capitals announced Thompson would not participate due to a lower-body injury he sustained Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Kings.

Thompson suffered the injury making a point-blank save on Kings winger Artemi Panarin with 18:22 remaining in Tuesday’s second period.

The 29-year-old backstop was slow to get up after the stop and looked visibly uncomfortable, constantly stretching his left leg out for the rest of regulation.

The news of Thompson’s injury comes after head coach Spencer Carbery was initially not concerned about his number-one goaltender shortly after the final horn against the Kings.

“Not (concerned) as of now,” Carbery told RMNB’s Katie Adler. “I’ll talk to Serbs (head athletic trainer Jason Serbus), but nothing right now.”

After allowing four goals on 25 shots faced in a loss to Los Angeles, Thompson is now 4-3-0, with a 2.90 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage this season. He has just one win in his last four starts after starting the year with three straight victories.

If Thompson misses any games due to his injury, Charlie Lindgren would take over as the Capitals’ starter. After the organization lost Clay Stevenson on waivers to the Winnipeg Jets late last month, Mitch Gibson is the only other goaltender on an NHL contract and would likely be recalled from the AHL’s Hershey Bears to back up Lindgren.

The Capitals don’t play again until Saturday night, when the Buffalo Sabres visit Capital One Arena. They then get another three-day break before facing the Philadelphia Flyers and Nashville Predators in a home-and-away back-to-back next week.
