Kuznetsov’s agent, Shumi Babaev, also posted a statement about Evgeny Sr.’s passing on his Instagram.
“Evgeny Kuznetsov’s father – Evgeny Kuznetsov Sr. passed away after a prolonged illness,” he wrote. “Shumi Babaeva Sports Agency sends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.”
While Kuznetsov was with the Capitals, Evgeny Sr. traveled stateside to accompany his son on Caps Dads’ trips and was with his son when he won the Stanley Cup championship in 2018.
Evgeny Sr. also attended the team’s 2023 Stadium Series game against the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh.
Earlier this month, Kuznetsov and his KHL team, Sibir Novosibirsk, mutually agreed to terminate his contract so that he could be with his family during his father’s health issues. Kuznetsov had been with the club for just 56 days, playing in eight games, before departing.
Kuznetsov signed with Sibir in August, and they became the fourth KHL team Kuznetsov has played for since the beginning of the 2024-25 campaign, after SKA St. Petersburg, Metallurg Magnitogorsk, and Salvat Yulaev.
RMNB’s thoughts are with the Kuznetsov family during this difficult time.
