The NHL waiver wire got crowded on Friday.
With Opening Night rosters due on Monday at 5 pm (ET), teams began aggressively whittling down their player counts at camp. Per PuckPedia, 61 players in total were placed on NHL waivers in one massive wave of preseason cuts, including four from the Washington Capitals.
Several veteran players with significant NHL experience hit waivers across the league, including the Kraken’s Brandon Tanev, the Blues’ Oskar Sundqvist and Nathan Walker, the Sharks’ Eric Comrie, and the Jets’ Noah Gregor.
The 34-year-old Tanev was likely aghast when he heard the news from Kraken management, but he scored just three points last season and did not score a goal at all in 56 appearances. If Tanev clears waivers and is assigned to the AHL, Utah would receive $1.225 million in cap relief, leaving $1.275 million of his $2.5 million cap hit on the books. He has two years remaining on his deal.
Even a coach’s son wasn’t safe from Friday’s cuts, as the Hurricanes placed Skyler Brind’Amour on waivers.
Any player who goes unclaimed during the waiver period can then be assigned to the minor leagues by his current club.
