Ryan Leonard scores first-ever World Championship goal for Team USA in rough loss to dominant Finland team

Ryan Leonard is on the board at the 2026 World Championship.

In his third game for Team USA, Leonard scored one of the Americans’ two goals in a rough 6-2 loss to a dominant Finland team that has won all three of its games at the tournament. Team USA is just 1-2 to start the action in Switzerland, particularly hampered by poor goaltending, as Toronto Maple Leafs backstop Joseph Woll has allowed eight goals on 28 shots in his two starts.

Leonard scored his goal in the third period with the Americans on a five-on-three power play. The Washington Capitals winger pounced on a rebound from a Ryan Ufko shot and slotted a shot past goaltender Justus Annunen.

The lone other goal from Team USA came via Calgary Flames winger Matt Coronato in the first period. Finland scored five goals on Woll on just 10 shots before he was pulled for Flames netminder Devin Cooley, who allowed one goal in the third period.

Leonard skated on the team’s first line, as he has done from the outset of the tournament, paired with Boston Bruins winger Alex Steeves and Pittsburgh Penguins center Tommy Novak.

Leonard finished the game with four shots on goal and two minor penalties, both for tripping. He skated just 11:56 of ice time in the loss.

Team USA has four more games left in Group A action, starting Wednesday against Germany. They currently sit fifth out of eight teams in the group’s standings, with their lone win coming over Great Britain on Sunday.
