Andrew Mangiapane has a new home.
Wednesday night, the Edmonton Oilers sent Mangiapane and a conditional 2027 first-round pick to the Chicago Blackhawks for forwards Jason Dickinson and Colton Dach. Mangiapane departs Edmonton after signing a two-year, $7.2 million ($3.6M AAV) contract with the Oilers this past summer.
Edmonton’s first-round pick is top-12 protected, and the Blackhawks are also retaining 50 per cent of Dickinson’s $4.25 million salary.
Mangiapane, who was recently waived and sent down to the AHL by the Oilers, had to waive his no-trade clause to make the deal happen.
The 29-year-old winger struggled to fit in with Edmonton, posting just 14 points (7g, 7a) in 52 games this season, and the team has been poor at five-on-five with him on the ice. During Mangiapane’s minutes, they posted a 47.8 expected goals percentage and were outscored 38-21, a team-worst minus-17 mark.
Dickinson, 30, is set to be an unrestricted free agent in July. The former 22-goal scorer has 13 points (6g, 7a) in 47 games this year and will be a cheaper bottom-six option for the Oilers.
Dach, 23, is in the middle of his first full NHL season after splitting time between the Blackhawks and the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs last year. The Alberta native was Chicago’s second-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft and has nine points (3g, 6a) in 53 games this year.
With the trade, the Oilers are set to have $2 million in playoff cap space, meaning they could make another depth move ahead of Friday’s trade deadline.
