Nicklas Backstrom’s remaining ties to the Washington DC area have ended with the sale of his home.
Backstrom’s Northern Virginia mansion was purchased by an undisclosed buyer for $11 million last week, after being put on the market last April.
According to the Washingtonian, Sherif Abdalla and Ali Alasgar Farhadov of Compass were the listing agents.
“It’s a really notable sale, not only for the price point but for who’s the seller,” Abdalla said. “It’s kind of bittersweet because it ends this chapter of the Backstrom family being in the area.”
Backstrom bought the 16,000-square-foot residential property in 2021, just after it was constructed, for $8.5 million. The 7-bedroom, 12-bathroom home was initially listed for sale at $14.99 million. The price was lowered to $11.9 million in July.
Among many other amenities, the home boasts a sauna and steam room, a movie theater, a bar, a full gym, an elevator, and six fireplaces. An integrated speaker system is also built into the walls throughout the property, positioned under every TV and outside by the swimming pool.
The news comes after Backstrom, his wife Liza, and their three children, daughters Haley and Alizee, and son Vince, have been back in Sweden since the summer. The 38-year-old centerman signed a one-year contract with an option for a second year with Brynäs IF, his hometown team in the SHL, in late July.
In 34 SHL games this season, the Capitals’ all-time leader in assists has recorded 22 points (2g, 20a). Brynäs has struggled to gain traction as a team, sitting 10th of 14 teams in the SHL standings with a 16-16-3 record.
Backstrom owns a luxury villa in his native Gävle, Sweden, which he had built in 2010. Brynäs plays its home games at Monitor ERP Arena in Gävle.
