Logan Thompson made an instant impact for the Washington Capitals last season. The goaltender’s 31 wins in 42 starts were the most recorded for the franchise since Braden Holtby notched 32 victories during the 2018-19 campaign.
If Thompson gets off to another strong start this year, he’ll join an elite list of all-time netminders. The 28-year-old needs 13 more wins to reach 100 in his career, and if he reaches that milestone before playing his 166th career game, he’ll land among the top 10 fastest in NHL history to do so.
Thompson owns an 87-38-17 career record across 146 games played, giving him a 19-game window to get there. He began the 2024-25 season with a 15-2-2 record across his first 19 decisions, so it’s entirely possible he reaches the milestone with room to spare. Going 13-0-0 to start this year would land him in a tie for fifth-fastest to 100 wins all-time with New York Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin (159 GP).
The Calgary native finished fourth in 2025 Vezina Trophy voting for the NHL’s best goaltender after posting a 31-6-6 record with a 2.49 goals-against average, a .910 save percentage, and two shutouts in his first season with the Capitals.
After signing a six-year, $35.1 million contract extension with the club in January, Thompson stayed in the DC area over the summer. He served as a guest coach alongside Holtby at development camp and participated in an autograph signing with John Carlson, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and Al Iafrate in Southern Maryland in July.
Thompson was also one of the first Capitals players to hit the ice for informal skates ahead of September’s training camp. He joined defenseman Matt Roy at MedStar Capitals Iceplex in late July, working with the team’s goalie coach, Scott Murray.
