Mitch Marner inks eight-year, $96 million contract with Vegas Golden Knights in massive sign-and-trade deal

Mitch Marner has found his new home for the next eight years.

According to hockey insider Chris Johnston, Marner has signed an eight-year, $96 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs before being traded to the Vegas Golden Knights in a massive sign-and-trade move. Toronto is expected to receive forward Nicolas Roy in return for their part in facilitating Marner’s max contract ahead of him becoming an unrestricted free agent on Tuesday.

Marner, 28, recorded 102 points (27g, 75a) in 81 games with the Maple Leafs last season. He added 13 points (2g, 11a) in 13 playoff games before Toronto faced another disappointing playoff series loss to the Florida Panthers in the second round.

The three-time NHL All-Star was set to be the biggest name on the open market, becoming a UFA for the first time in his career. He’ll now join the Golden Knights after completing a six-year deal with the Maple Leafs that carried a $10.9 million salary cap hit.

Marner joins a Vegas team that is the last non-Florida Panthers club to hoist the Stanley Cup. After winning the franchise’s first championship in 2023, the Golden Knights have not advanced past the second round in the last two postseasons.

The Golden Knights will likely pair Marner with leading scorer Jack Eichel to form one of the best first lines in hockey for the foreseeable future. Eichel had 94 points (28g, 66a) in 77 games during the 2024-25 campaign.
