Ryan Leonard made his NHL debut against the Boston Bruins, Tuesday night. The 20-year-old winger had the unique opportunity to play his first NHL game not only in his home state but also in the city where he was playing college hockey just a few days ago.
Both of those factors ensured that Leonard had a whole host of support in attendance at TD Garden to watch his first official NHL game with the Washington Capitals. And, they made their presence known almost immediately as his Boston College teammates lined the glass for warmups.
Spotted in the crowd, among others, were Eagles goaltender Jacob Fowler and defensemen Drew Fortescue and Aram Minnetian.
Leonard and the rest of the Eagles have played several games at TD Garden over the past two seasons, including the Beanpot final against Boston University on February 10. On the winning side of that game, and later named Beanpot MVP, was fellow Capitals prospect and Boston University defenseman, Cole Hutson.
Hutson, also teammates with Leonard on gold-medal-winning Team USA at the 2025 World Juniors, made the quick trip from his school to support his friend and possibly check up on his future team. Hutson and the Terriers are still in the NCAA Tournament, securing one of the four spots in this year’s Frozen Four.
Given the game’s close proximity to Leonard’s hometown, Northampton, Massachusetts, the whole Leonard family was able to make it to the game. His parents, John and Cindy, as well as his siblings, John, Alyssa, and Brianna, all got to see his first strides on NHL ice.
John, Ryan’s older brother, is playing for the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers this season, but luckily, Charlotte is in the middle of a four-day break between games.
Leonard finished his debut skating 14:13 of ice time, recording one individual shot attempt, one individual scoring chance, a plus-one rating, and three hits.
