Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the rights holder for Washington Capitals games, announced a cooperation agreement with the NHL on Tuesday that gives Joe Beninati the opportunity to call all remaining Caps games this season and guarantees the play-by-play man will be in the booth for Alex Ovechkin’s potential record-tying and record-breaking goals.
“Having the chance to call this exceptional moment in hockey history is a profound honor for me and our entire live game crew,” Beninati said in a statement. “We have had the pleasure of describing and documenting almost all of Alex’s goals throughout his career and capturing his pursuit of the all-time goal-scoring record is a privilege few get to experience. We can’t wait to share this incredible milestone with our viewers and celebrate the legacy of an all-time great.”

Through the cooperation agreement with the NHL, Monumental Sports Network will be able to produce its own broadcasts for archival purposes during the four exclusive, nationally televised Capitals games in April: April 6 at NYI (TNT, truTV, Max), April 10 vs. CAR (ESPN+, Hulu), April 12 at CBJ (ABC), and April 15 at NYI (ESPN).
“If Ovechkin records a historic goal during a national telecast, MNMT platforms will release recorded video and audio of Beninati calling the significant moment and other MNMT talent reacting to Ovechkin’s achievement,” MSE wrote in a release. “The network will then air the full MNMT game broadcast for Capitals fans to enjoy on MNMT 24 hours after the national broadcast.”
Monumental Sports Network was already slated to broadcast 14 of the Capitals’ final 18 regular season games, meaning if Ovechkin’s historic tallies happen any other time this season, Beninati’s call will be heard live.
“We are immensely grateful to the NHL for their collaboration in ensuring that Capitals fans will hear Alex Ovechkin’s historic moments called by Joe Beninati and our incredible Monumental Sports Network on-air talent,” Zach Leonsis said. “After 28 years in our broadcast booth, Joe’s voice has become synonymous with Capitals hockey and he deserves to call these once-in-a-lifetime goals. I’d also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Capitals fans. Your passion and dedication inspire us every day, and our network could not be more excited to bring you unparalleled coverage of this incredible journey as we celebrate greatness together.”
Beninati previously expressed his sadness that national TV might snipe his opportunity to call the biggest goals of his career. “It’s gonna hurt,” he said to Elliot In The Morning in late February. “We want to be there for all of it, leading up to 894 and 895. Desperately.”
Now he will — to all of our great joy.
