The Washington Capitals are back on the ice to conclude their season-high five-game home streak. Tonight they will face the Ottawa Senators, featuring sandpaper forward extraordinaire, Brady Tkachuk.

The matchup is important for both teams. Ottawa sits two points out of the final wild card spot in the East while the Capitals are on a three-game losing streak ahead of Friday’s trade deadline.

In net, Logan Thompson will start for the Capitals and oppose Linus Ullmark in the opposing twine.

Puck drop for the Caps-Senators game is a little after 6:30 pm on Monumental Sports Network. Crazy early, I know. Joe Beninati and Alan May have the call. Welcome back, Nick Jensen!

🚨 1-0 Washington Capitals. WSH Goal: Connor McMichael (15). Assists: C. McMichael (25), R. Sandin (18). Time: 03:34.

McMichael scores from the door step, just pushing the puck past Ullmark. The tally was challenged for goaltender interference, but it was ruled a good goal. Not sure what Travis Green saw there. Capitals now go to the power play. David Perron will serve the bench minor.

The Capitals have the first seven shots on net.

Dylan Strome negates the final 1:21 of the power play after being called for a questionable slashing penalty. We’ll skate 4 on 4 and then Ottawa will get a 39 second power play.

🚨 2-0 Washington Capitals. WSH Goal: Pierre-Luc Dubois (22). Assists: M. Fehervary (14), P. Dubois (36). Time: 01:41.

Dubois gives the Capitals a 2-0 lead after a ridiculous one-on-one play beating his defender to the net and finding PLD on his backhand.

This was insane.

Nick Jensen went down to one knee to block an Ovechkin one-timer on the power play.

Lars Eller to the box for tripping Drake Batherson at 13:57.

🚨 3-0 Washington Capitals. WSH PPG: Tom Wilson (27). Assists: P. Dubois (37), D. Strome (42). Time: 06:53.

🚨 3-1 Washington Capitals. OTT Goal: Shane Pinto (13). Assists: J. Sanderson (32), C. Giroux (27). Time: 12:18.

Sanderson walks Carlson and finds Pinto for a layup. Insane individual play by the young defenseman.

Nick Jensen to the box for interference at 14:55.

Ullmark spins around making a save on Alex Ovechkin during the Capitals power play. Ovi’s shot is super heavy tonight. He already has 5 SOG tonight.

Taylor Raddysh trips Nick Jensen at 19:38.

At intermission: The Capitals lead 3-1, but Ottawa is beginning to stir. Shots are in favor of the Capitals 31 to 24, but the Senators lead in 5v5 shot attempts 35 to 33.

3rd Period

McMichael sprung on a semi-breakaway but is stopped by Ullmark.

🚨 3-3 tie. OTT Goal: Shane Pinto (14). Assists: M. Amadio (10), T. Chabot (25). Time: 08:01.

Pinto scores in front of the net like 10 seconds after Nick Jensen commits a penalty on Brandon Duhaime that goes uncalled.

A very untimely tripping penalty by Aliaksei Protas giving the Senators their fifth power play.

🚨 4-3 Washington Capitals. WSH Goal: Martin Fehervary (3). Assists: T. Wilson (20), A. Protas (28). Time: 12:43.

After the penalty kill concludes, Fehervary, driving the center lane, takes a pass from Tom Wilson and scores. HUGE.

With an assist on Fehervary’s goal, Tom Wilson has his second career Gordie Howe Hat Trick.

PLD delay of game for chipping the puck over the glass at 18:23. The Senators will finish the game on a power play.

With 11.2 seconds left, Sandin gets accidentally elbowed in the head in the offensive zone. Josh Norris clipped Sandin in the head – incidental contact. Sandin down the tunnel to the locker room.

And this game is going to OVERTIME.
