Craig Laughlin’s open-heart surgery to repair a bicuspid aortic valve and a blocked left anterior descending artery was a success. Laughlin underwent the procedure this morning and was admitted into the ICU early in the afternoon.

Courtney Laughlin, Locker’s daughter, posted an update on her social media accounts shortly before puck drop of the Washington Capitals’ game against the Florida Panthers.

Courtney wrote:

#lockerstrong ❤️ update: my dad is stable after undergoing what the surgeon said was a successful surgery. He still has a long way to go on his road to recovery, and will be in the ICU for at least another day. Thank you to our #ALLCAPS family for every message and prayer 🙏

Joe Beninati and Alan May added a few additional details during the Monumental Sports Network telecast, including that Laughlin was his “feisty” self.

Joe Beninati: I just saw a text from his daughter Courtney that said Craig is stable. He’s still under in terms of anesthesia. I would imagine they won’t bring him out too soon, it’ll take some time there. They have questioned him, I understand, and he’s responded in his usual feisty manner. All in all, it sounds like things went very well today and we’ll hope that will continue overnight. He’d love to be here because the champs are in town and this is an impressive team from South Florida.

Alan May: Word is that they woke Locker a little while ago and asked him where he was at and said, “at the damn hospital.”

At Capital One Arena, there were numerous tributes to Laughlin whose surgery fell on the same day as Heart Health Awareness Night. The Capitals’ coaching staff wore lapel pins shaped like a heart with Laughlin’s number 18 inside.

Both the Capitals’ TV and radio teams also got their hands on Locker Strong shirts and wore them during the broadcast.

Inside the arena, Capitals PA announcer Byron Hudtloff, who is filling in for Wes Johnson, announced Laughlin’s successful surgery during the first period. The camera then panned to Courtney, who was in the building to donate $10,000 to the American Heart Association. Courtney could be seen mouthing to the crowd, “Thank you.”

The Capitals also posted a video during the first intermission in which many of the Capitals’ stars wished Laughlin well in his recovery.

Earlier in the day, the Capitals posted a photo of a flexing Alex Ovechkin posing in a Locker Strong shirt.
