Logan Thompson reveals that Team Canada never contacted him once about 4 Nations Face-Off, wasn’t surprised by roster snub

Logan Thompson has been by far and away the best Canadian goaltender in the NHL this season. His hot start to the 2024-25 season continued in the Washington Capitals’ 4-2 comeback win over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night, as Thompson was the arguable MVP of the victory.

After four separate breakaway stops in the third period led to his 11th win of the season, Thompson was asked if his big-time performance was fueled by his recent Team Canada 4 Nations Face-Off roster snub. Thompson played down those talks in his answer and revealed why he wasn’t surprised by not being included as one of the nation’s three goaltending picks.

“No, I don’t think [I played with a chip on my shoulder],” Thompson said postgame. “Obviously, there was a lot of noise, more in the media. Hockey Canada never reached out to me or anything like that. I kinda knew before that I wasn’t on their list.

“I’m still cheering for them. I hope Monty goes out there and kills it. Monty, Hilly, and Binner – congrats to them. I’m still going to be cheering for Team Canada and hope they go and win it all.”

Canada, a nation with a very shallow goaltending pool this season, went with Samuel Montembeault, Jordan Binnington, and Adin Hill over Thompson. Thompson directly outdueled Montembeault on Saturday night and has better numbers than all three goalies this year.

Goaltender Record Goals-against average Save percentage Goals saved above expected
Logan Thompson 11-1-2 2.48 .913 8.1
Jordan Binnington 8-9-2 2.87 .900 1.6
Adin Hill 12-4-2 2.63 .905 7.8
Sam Montembeault 8-11-2 2.89 .905 1.8

Thompson has been even better in his last 10 starts, going 7-1-2 with a 2.19 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage. He has helped the Capitals rise into a tie with the Minnesota Wild for the most standings points in the NHL (40).

The 27-year-old Calgary native is also no stranger to representing his country at the senior level. He played four games for Canada at the 2022 World Championship, winning a silver medal.
