The Washington Capitals had a day off on Friday following their 2-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche.
While players got in their rest at home and caught up with their families, MedStar Capitals Iceplex, the team’s practice facility located in at Ballston, Virginia, had its first snow showers of the 2024-25 season. The snow occurred just under a week before the Thanksgiving holiday, which is early for this area.
The light snow was part of a Fujiwhara-influenced system where one strong low eventually swallowed up a weaker one, causing a large spiraling storm across the Northeast and Canada.
From Silver Spring to Point of Rocks, non-accumulating snow fell in the surrounding DC area during the morning. The precipitation eventually changed over to rain around noon.
Per the Washington Post’s Capital Weather Gang, temperatures in the area approached freezing, but were not cold enough to cancel school or cause icy conditions.
Snow is coming down at decent clip in parts of region but no worries about road accumulation in the Beltway area with these temps. Am starting to see reports of slushy accumulation in colder areas north and northwest of Beltway. pic.twitter.com/P2uhBq1nm9

To the west and north though, blizzard like conditions blanketed Western Maryland and West Virginia with powder. A foot or two of snow is expected to fall through Saturday. Pennsylvania and New Jersey also saw accumulation.

The storm will not affect the Capitals’ Saturday plans. The team will return to practice on Saturday at 10:30 am for a morning skate. Then, they’ll face off against the New Jersey Devils at Capital One Arena at 7 pm.
